September Show Us Your Books. Can you believe next month is our seventh anniversary of this link up that we weren't even sure people would like? I'm sure we'll do prizes as usual. I picked up an extra pair of badass reader socks for someone when I bought mine last month. Thank you all for linking up and for reading when you don't link up.
Here's what I've been reading since the last linkup.
Engrossing Reads
The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller - I loved this book. It is dark as fuck but it spoke to me. I think a lot of people will read it and think what in the fuck is this about and the answer is a lot of things and also nothing. If that does not sit well with you, do not attempt. Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaughy - This book, also dark as fuck. Also loved it, and it also spoke to me. TW: rape also. Abuse. So damn heavy but truly good. OCNJ library hard cover
The Night She Disappeared by Lisa Jewell - I devoured this. Standard Lisa Jewell fare in which I read with enjoyment and don't try to figure anything out so I end up, you know, actually enjoying the ride. Free advanced copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
Gone For Good (Detective Annalisa Vega #1) by Joanna Schaffhausen - Compulsively readable, I was holding my breath a few times. I will definitely read more Vega books! I'm excited for this to read a series. Thanks to Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Her Deadly Touch (Detective Josie Quinn #12) by Lisa Regan - Twelve books in and there was only one that annoyed me. Solidly great reads I plow through as soon as they are released. Keep them coming. Kindle e-book, purchased
Dark Roads by Chevy Stevens - I have not been a huge Chevy Stevens fan over the years and would probably have never picked this up if it wasn't sent to me via Netgalley without requesting. This book knocked it out of the park for me. It sucked me in and was a compelling read. It even left me with a little book hangover. Thanks to Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Sundown Motel by Simone St. James - "This book has been on my shelf for well over a year," was invariably my comment every time I saw it in the link. Well it wasn't this book on my shelf, it's another of hers, but I finally read this one and I'm super glad I did. I was sucked in even though it contains paranormal shit that usually annoys me. OCNJ library hard cover
The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams - I loved this. What a book for readers. Like a little gift of love, and a super quick read. Thanks to Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review
Passed the Time Just Fine
The Good Turn (Cormac Reilly #3) by Dervla McTiernan - This was harder for me to sink into than the previous two books but I still enjoyed it and will carry on with the series. Free advanced copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
Velvet was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - The writing is excellent and the cover is amazing. This was hard for me to get into though, and that has been the kiss of death in the Covid-era reading but I'm glad I saw it through. This felt a little like the layout of a musical, not sure why. I liked Elvis's internal monologue a lot. Free advanced copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
The People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry - This was fine. Friends to lovers is not my favorite thing, nor are When Harry Met Sally type of situations. I find them to be frustrating like the whole world can see it except you two LOL. But then if they could see it, there would be no book. I know. I'm so not a romantic person. This is good for almost everyone, not really for me. OCNJ library paperback
Never Saw Me Coming by Vera Kurian - YA book that was enticing then not as much but still finish-worthy. Interesting premise. Thanks to Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review
Not Worth It
A Slow Fire Burning by Paula Hawkins - I was looking forward to this. This was excruciatingly hard for me to get into and read like a dried up dog turd. If I could go back and do it again, I wouldn't. OCNJ library hard cover
My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones - Definitely out of my lane - I am not a fan of horror flicks or gore - but the writing was pretty good. If those things ARE in your lane, this is worth it for you. Thanks to Netgalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
