Show Us Your Books - July 2020

More than halfway through the reading year, and I should maybe consider doing my favorites of the first half of the year post soon, huh? The year in reading just like the year in everything else in a global pandemic has been quite different. I can barely remember what book I'm currently reading sometimes.

Anywhooo here's what I've been reading since the last linkup
Light on the pics and heavy on the kindle because I was working through Netgalley.

Engrossing Reads
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett - Is the whole world reading this book over the past month? I think so, and for good reason. The writing was excellent as was the story. Bennett is on my must read list. She wrote something on the bathroom wall? Move over, let me read it. Hardcover, own
The Guest List by Lucy Foley - This was a weird, dark, delicious, and quick moving little read. Hard copy, own, put up into shore house for guests

She Rides Shotgun by Jordan Harper - I know I got this from this linkup, not sure who read it. This was excellent. Fucked up and excellent. OCNJ library hard cover

Luster by Raven Leilani - The writing was superb - writing you can sink into. Sentences that bite. Unexpected laughs. Characters with layers. So good, I already pre-ordered a copy to show support for the author. If you are looking for more books by black authors, here's one. Free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, comes out August 4

And Now She's Gone by Rachel Howzell Hall - Compulsively readable. I'd read more Grayson Skies in a second. Great with some twists. Another by a black author if you're looking Free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, book comes out September 22

Passed the Time Just Fine

Florence Adler Swims Forever by Rachel Beanland - I don't know what I thought this was going to be about - I liked the title and when I cracked it open, it immediately placed itself in Atlantic City, which is right down the coast from our shore house - but it was a much different book than I was expecting. Something happens early on and I thought oh wow this author is really going for it. I liked it despite hating one of the characters from jump and the presence of a child narrator which I also rarely like. Fair play - there are numerous narrators, be prepared.  c/o Netgalley free advanced copy in exchange for an honest review

Outsider (Kate Burkholder #12) by Linda Castillo - This might be the first time one of the Kate novels has been in this category versus Engrossing Reads which is honestly great for the 12th book in a series. I still liked it, but I did not love it. I appreciate the glimpse into Kate's past and the author doing something different with this book, but the lack of movement in the story itself or geography and the focus narrowed in on Kate and people we are not familiar with versus Kate and the crew at the Painters Mill PD and Tomasetti was meh. Free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Unseen (Will Trent #7) by Karin Slaughter - Another of my go to series books and again, fine. Not my favorite in the series and no where close to being done with it. OCNJ library hard cover

The Dilemma by B.A. Paris - A few things about this bothered me to the point of distraction. It was a quick read, not my favorite by this author. Free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Gonzo Girl by Cheryl Della Pietra - A riff on Hunter S. Thompson. If you don't like him, you won't like this. Used paperback, own
