Engrossing Reads

Writers & Lovers by Lily King - I didn’t know what I was getting into with this. It feels like a writer’s book and a reader’s book, a little raw, a little 70s (though not set there), a little throwbackish, a little meandering, and I loved it. The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker - I'm not a romancey person, but I am an Alaska person, despite having never been there. I really enjoyed this book after the main character got over her Schitts Creek early Alexis self. Paperback, Philly library

Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stephenson - Everything you think you know or believe about the justice system and race and the death penalty, set it down outside of yourself and read this. It's not preachy or overly technical, it's just showing us the workings of the systemic machine and the human beings in it. I was also going to say it's not overly political, but in this day and age someone will read the excerpt I included and think it's political even though it's just wanting equal justice under the law for all people. My heart is in my throat when I even think about the title. Philly library hard cover

Cold Heart Creek (Detective Josie Quinn #7) by Lisa Regan - A cult and one of my favorite female detectives? Done and done. I loved this latest installment. Kindle ebook

Passed the Time Just Fine

Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner - This is the Jennifer Weiner I remember, not the Mrs. Everything Jennifer Weiner that I went wild for last year. That’s not to say this isn’t good, it’s fine, it’s just not Mrs Everything. If you are a JW fan, put this on your list. It comes out May 19. Free advanced copy from Simon & Schuster via Netgalley

One of Us is Next by Karen McManus - Never have I been more acutely aware how much more I liked Two Can Keep a Secret over One of Us is Lying than when I was reading this sequel to One of Us is Lying. Which is not to say I didn't like the first one, or didn't like this one. It was fine. Revved up at the end. I figured half of it out early, which I rarely do, but that didn't bother me. What Happens in Paradise (Paradise #2) by Elin Hilderbrand - I read the first one last February and I'll be happy to make it a tradition to read what I assume will be the final one next February. They come out in October or November and that's about when I get it from the library. I read this one in a few hours and it was nothing mind blowing but a nice continuation of the story. Not Worth It

You are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen - Not my favorite book by these two. The premise felt forced and zero parts of this were believable. One of the few books I look back on at the end and think, "I should have stopped reading that within two hours." Free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. 

Did Not Finish

The Third to Die by Allison Brennan - This is absolutely my type of book, which I did not connect with or want to read at all. There are some mysteries in the world, this is one. Free copy courtesy of Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
