Every once in a while I hit a few books in a row that I can't get into and that will usually halt me in my reading tracks. When that happens, I just enjoy the brain break and pick it back up when it feels natural to.

Engrossing Reads
Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell - Oh, I loved this book. It was creepy but well written and totally nuts. Check it out. I love when I make the correct Book of the Month Club pick. Hardback, own
Passed the Time Just Fine
The Twilight Wife by A.J. Banner - I read a lot of books like these that require suspense of belief but this one, man. I am not sure how these people didn't figure this shit out before. Philly library paperback
A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena - This was fine. Fine. I might need a break from the domestic thrillers between this one and The Twilight Wife. OCNJ library hardback
Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney - This book threw me for a few loops, which is always enjoyable. It was also really unpleasant in parts. OCNJ library hardback
All the Beautiful Lies by Peter Swanson - I quite enjoy his books, but I know not everyone does. There is a weird formality to his writing sometimes. I was left shaking my head at the end of this one. Philly library hardback

All the Little Liars by Charlaine Harris (Aurora Teagarden, #9) - I devoured this series years ago. I was happy to find there was a new one. Not so happy to realize I was no longer immersed in this little town and didn't like it much when I went back for a visit. Paperback, own
Saints for All Occasions by J. Courtney Sullivan - Her books always sound better in theory than they are in my reading reality. I feel like I pump myself up like you can like this one! And then I don't. That was the case here as has been in the past. She's not the writer for me, and that's okay - she's the writer for many. OCNJ library hardback
The Anniversary Man by R.J. Ellory - I plucked this off the shelf. I should've left it there. Philly library hardback

What have you been reading?
Then She Was Gone is one of the next thrillers I want to read- glad to hear you liked it. Sometimes I Lie sounds good too.
ReplyDeleteThere were definitely a few unpleasant parts to Sometimes I Lie but I enjoyed the slow reveal of her lies. Then She Was Gone sounds totally up my alley and adding it to my TBR. I also need to cutback on some of my thrillers because they are starting to meld together, which is lessening my enjoyment even on the really good ones. I never read the Aurora Teagarden series but I watch the terrible and terribly addictive Aurora Teagarden movies on the Hallmark Channel. I can't help it.
ReplyDeleteI read the first Aurora Teagarden book a few years ago and wasn't impressed. It was okay, but no more than okay.
ReplyDeleteI really want to read that Lisa Jewell book. I've read a couple of her more "chick lit" type books and enjoyed them so I'm intrigued to see how she does with a thriller.

ReplyDeleteI haven't read a thriller in a while, but I'll have to check out Then She Was Gone when I'm in the mood for one. I love when you end up with a BOTM favorite. I've been intrigued by Saints for all Occasions, but for some reason I never end up adding it to my TBR.
ReplyDeleteOh, girl... You had me at "It was creepy but well written and totally nuts." It's been awhile since I've read a thriller. Might need to remedy that soon.
ReplyDeleteI have that with some authors too - better in theory than in reality for my personal reading preferences. At least you know to put it down and not use up any more of your reading time on it :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I read Then She Was Gone this month too - I enjoy a page turner, but man that turned out to be creepier than I expected. I just wanted the poor lady to be able to enjoy a new love life, ha!
I read and enjoyed Sometimes I Lie this month too. Lots of twists. The She Was Gone has been on my to read list. The Twilight Wife and A Stranger in the House sound like my kind of reads, but I need to take a break from the suspense genre. They are all getting too similar for me.
ReplyDeleteoh man, i think i almost chose Then She Was Gone - i think one of my friends did so i'll have to borrow it. glad you didn't hate all the beautiful lies - i was definitely shaking my head at times during that one. bummer about the charlaine harris book. i have her other series on my list - i've heard they are great - and i do hope to read them one day, once i get over the ending of the sookie stackhouse books. i can really hold a book grudge lol.
ReplyDeleteI definitely need to read that Lisa Jewell book - I have heard nothing but good things!!!
ReplyDeleteI tried the Aurora Teagarden series a few years ago and couldn't get into it...maybe I should attempt one more time.
ReplyDeleteI was going to try The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson recently because it was highly recommended. Then I couldn't figure out why he sounded so familiar and then I realized he wrote The Girl With a Clock for a Heart and I didn't love that one at all. So maybe someday.
A Stranger in the House was just forgettable, I thought. Those types of books all run together for me these days. They have to be pretty good to stand out.
Adding then she was gone to my TBR. Agree that all those thrillers run together lately, I read a stranger in the house a while ago and thought it was fine too.
ReplyDeleteOhhh I am putting Then She Was Gone on my list!!! I read A Stranger in the House awhile ago but hardly remember it because all I’ve been reading are thrillers lately :)
ReplyDeleteThen She Was Gone totally getting added to my TBR.
ReplyDeleteFrom the titles of some of your reads, I think you have a thing for "Lying." lol
ReplyDeleteI really am tempted to join the book of the month club. You are pushing me even more now.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same about A Stranger in the House. Not as good as her first but enjoyable enough. Swanson's newest is on my list and I do usually ilke his dark, creepy style.

In the spring and summer I hit a reading slump, I feel like I'm in one now too.
ReplyDeleteLot's of thrillers, I'm waiting for Sometimes I Lie from my library.
Then She Was Gone is definitely going on my list! I'm always in the mood for a good thriller! And I already had A Stranger In The House on my list, but hopefully I'll get the chance to read it soon. The Couple Next Door was just ok, so I'm hoping to like this one better.
ReplyDeleteThat's a bummer when you revisit an author you used to love and then realize that the love has died. At least you did read some entertaining ones this month! I read I Found You by Lisa Jewell and enjoyed it, I'll have to pick up Then She Was Gone this summer--sounds like a good summer read.
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to avoid getting into anymore series that have like 10 books! Charlaine Harris got me last time!!
ReplyDeleteI cruise through thrillers pretty quickly but I just don't enjoy them that much, you know? Every once in a while I'll pick one up when enough people have raved about it, but usually I like mystery and hist. fic.
ReplyDeleteI'm always paying attention to that "Engrossing Reads" section, though!
Will check out Then She Was Gone - I need to add more thrillers to my reading list!
ReplyDeleteAdding Then She was Gone and All the Beautiful Lies...were you shaking mad, or was it that FREAKY?
ReplyDeleteLove Swanson, so going to add that one. And have also heard some really good things about Lisa Jewell, so will try to pick that one up too.
ReplyDeleteOk I have to pick up then she was gone, it's been on my radar.

Sorry you didn't have more engrossing reads. I need to check that first one out.
ReplyDeleteAnd Then She Was Gone and A Stranger in the House are going on my summer reading list!
ReplyDeleteI had a DNF this month, too. They definitely kill my reading mojo.
ReplyDeleteCreepy is right up my alley so I'm in for Then She Was Gone. Checking my library for it right now.
ReplyDeleteJust added Then She Was Gone to my TBR!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! I'm sorry you didn't find yourself as immersed in the Aurora Teegarden books anymore. I've been watching some of the movies and those are fun.

Adding Then She Was Gone to my list!!
ReplyDeleteI am adding Then She Was Gone to my list! There are a few books I downloaded from the library this month and sent right back, not even a chapter in. Should have left them! Dont even remember their titles to add to my post to warn others, oops.
ReplyDeleteAll or most of these are already on my list! I love the pug cameos the best in those pictures!
ReplyDeleteThen She Was Gone is at the top of my TBR list. Thanks for the fun linkup!
ReplyDeleteOh oof I just lost my crap at the Geege pawprint. For some reason I thought J. Courtney Sullivan was a guy, even though I actually read another one of her books, "The Engagements." (It was ok.) I'm split in between reading a book on data or reading Carrie Fisher's Wishful Drinking next. I'm trying to "sharpen the saw" a bit so maybe I'll let Carrie be the reward for the data book.
ReplyDeleteI'm adding Then She Was Gone, A Stranger In The House, and Sometimes I Lie to my (very long) TBR list! Thanks for the awesome suggestions!
ReplyDeleteI really liked Sometimes I Lie (probably more than you did since I gave it a solid 4 stars).
ReplyDeleteMany of these are on my list already, though I'm especially glad to see that Then She Was Gone earned high praise. I really liked a Lisa Jewell book I read last year, and I've been looking forward to reading more of her work.
I hate when I revisit a book (or, in your case here, a series) and it just doesn't have the same appeal it once did.
I read a lot of the Sookie Stackhouse books by Harris, but none of her other work. Sometimes switching up genres is needed, and really affects the way I at least view a book. I may love it at one period of life and be bored at another.
ReplyDeleteI’ve never read that Harris series but I feel like I might feel the same if I went back to the Stackhouse Books. Loved them then, but probably not anymore.
ReplyDeleteOh psychological thrillers are my favorite! There are quite a few books that you mentioned that I will have to check out.
ReplyDeletei'm a fan of peter swanson! Going to take a look at all the beautiful lies!
ReplyDeleteI just added Then She Was Gone to my TBR. One of these days I'll like a thriller or completely stop reading them. We shall see... XO - Alexandra

I think all readers go through phases of ebb & flow in the reading interest & subsequent progress. Recognizing & acting on "do not finish" is a key in moving through it, I find. I'll have to check out "All the Beautiful Lies" - I enjoyed his "The Kind Worth Killing."
