Thursday Thoughts - just act normal

1. If you are down because you feel like people you know or mutually know through someone are spending more time defending Nazis and racists than denouncing them, sneak in a quick visit with your smart and funny almost two year old niece for a hug and stickers.

2. My poor Geege has a mild case of aspiration pneumonia. HousePaws mobile vet came yesterday and he got a chest x-ray right in the comfort of his own home. He's on meds now and hopefully on the mend. Meanwhile Cheech and Chong had to go to an actual vet last night for a pre-dental surgery checkup. These dogs are killing me.

3. Do you know how much money I have spent on hand soap this year? I leave soap at four sinks for new renters every Saturday, and I hate shitty soap so I buy Method or Mrs. Meyers and it adds up. So I finally said fuck it! I'm making my own. And I did. And it's foamy. Whenever I make a cleaning or household product in my kitchen I feel like a magician or Bill Nye the Science Guy.

5. My Dad & Carol are down the shore this week...thankfully since a fire alarm needed to be replaced in the main house and as a former fireman I trust my Dad with that replacement much more than I trust myself. Shore this weekend with Jana and Jody, college girls! It's been over 15 years since the three of us were together. I'm very excited.

6. Does anyone remember being in school and literally only having a sip of water from the water fountain after recess and nothing else all day? I was discussing this with my knottie girls yesterday and have convinced myself this is why I am always thirsty and petrified to go anywhere for five minutes without water.

7. How freaking awesome is Gladys? She sent me a kindle copy of Cocoa Beach by Beatriz Williams. I will cross that off my August list soon. I'm dragging ass through a book right now. I broke my brain reading over 30 books between June 13 and August 8 and I am now in recovery. Don't worry. I think I'm going to make it.

8.  I cannot stop thinking about what happened in Charlottesville this weekend. Actually not so much what happened this weekend, but how people responded. I know not everyone shares their opinion on social media, but I've been blown the fuck back by people who do that devoted a sentence against Nazis and eleventy billion sentences that somehow defend or protect them. I am drinking big cups of let that shit go in an attempt to be zen in my approach to challenging people who are defending this in any way because while discussions with brick walls are tiresome and maddening, sometimes the only tool we have to put a small hole in the wall is a dinky motherfucking pen. But we scrape away because when we don't challenge these old notions they poison the water and nothing ever changes, here comes another generation of it and no. just fucking no. the time for racist nazis is fucking over now, okay? This image included below is some person's facebook status and damn if it doesn't say exactly what I'm thinking (thanks Stacey for sending it to me). Thank God for the leaders of the armed forces, it's good to know some people at the top of the game are not out of their fucking minds. Especially the United States Marine Corps - constantly on the front lines fighting for the ideals of liberty and justice for ALL so we can try to live up to them. pssst: we're failing right now. Also, for those singing the "the tolerant left is intolerant" song, read up on the Paradox of Tolerance, a philosophical principle coined in 1945, spurred by, you know...Nazis.

9. Reminder:

10. E-card of the week:

Once again, it's my Friday.

  2. Poor pups. And poor you. There's few things more stressful than vet visits for me at this point. Also, goodbye money.

Kids these days keep water bottles at their desks. I remember the coveted trips to the fountain well.

  3. Just made some foamy EO soap for the bathrooms this past week - I'm hooked. Much MUCH cheaper than the regular soap too. Hope they don't take those too.

I was just talking with someone last night about current water intake -- she struggles to get a 32 oz. bottle down during her day. I try to drink that much before I even get to work. Difference is, she's a teacher and can't go to the bathroom any time she wants and I have a desk job. I'd die if I had to go back to the one sip during every other passing period.

  4. I am so excited for this weekend! I feel like we've been planning it forever.

I want to stay away from the news but I can't. Have you watched the VICE report yet? It is horrifying. I am, however, glad for all those speaking out even if they won't use certain words or name people by name. Small starts are better than no starts.

  5. Poor Geege. Love the stickers from Lola. I need to drink some let-this-shit-go. I'm just... at a loss. Your first bullet nailed it - I am deeply saddened to see "sides" play out via social media and Facebook likes. I feel like I was taught to be better and to want more, but those who I feel taught me are... liars? I don't know what else to call them. It shouldn't be this emotionally draining to share your opinion, but here we are.

On an unrelated note, hope you have a great weekend! Glad you and Jana and friends get to enjoy it together!

  6. Okay, YES. I can remember going to summer camp and sobbing because I was so hot and thirsty and it wasn't time for a bathroom break, so I couldn't have my sip from the water fountain. I am now an adult who has panic attacks being anywhere without access to at least three water bottles.

  7. Home made soap, need a tutorial, unless i missed it or forgot i read it. Brain these days. And yes about water. I LOVE water and hate not having it close by.

  8. Making your own soap - that's brilliant. Also, I commented on Olivia Wilde's instagram post last night and then got sucked into reading the comments. They made me want to throw up, so I reported each and every nasty one as offensive. I'll help clean up one place at a time. Enjoy your gf weekend at the shore!!

  9. I hear you on hand soap, it adds up. But it's one of the things I just don't like making myself because when it runs out in one bathroom I have to make it RIGHT NOW and I sometimes I don't have time ya know? #IGotLazy
I mentioned this on your moms insta, but the anti-fascist thing makes me crazy because they are not fascists. They're nazis. Fascists are supposed to believe in totalitarian unity (I mean they still suck don't get me wrong) over class and race struggle. So if you're systematically killing Jews, or in this case anyone who isn't an American white male, you're a nazi, not a fascist.

  10. I've been thinking about the paradox of tolerance a lot lately, mostly to be prepared for the discussions I know I'll face eventually with people who are more than happy to sit on their asses and let the Holocaust happen all over again while they flip through a magazine. It's a good concept to be armed with. Also, +100000 to that "anti-fascist" FB post. Hell to the yes. Thanks for sharing.

  11. When I was at youth camp this summer, I was constantly struggling to get the kids to drink water... they just DONT DO IT & you're right - it matters how they learn in school.

Oh man... hope your dogs are all better. It's tough sometimes. We're talking about getting another dog & I'm like, Whew... its tough raising a puppy again & all that comes with it... but if I see the dog in person, I know I'll totally forget all the sensible stuff :)

  12. I am still so angry. I only got about 4 hours of sleep Tuesday night because I just could not let go of how smug he was. How repulsive he was. How he doesn't care that white supremacists are so happy with his response. That they say Heil Trump. Any normal human being would be appalled by that. Wouldn't want their name even associated with that phrase. But not him. I'm preaching to the choir, but lordy. I'm pissed.

I hope your fur babies are doing okay. Today is the fifth anniversary of the passing on my beloved cat, Emeril. I told Max we would have to look at pictures of him. He was not enthused. :D

Have a great weekend with Jana and friends!

  14. Look at you Ms. Scientist making your own soap, your brain isn't too broken! Ugh I still can't gt over all of this, but I do have to say that the beautiful thoughts and posts by those on the side of justice are making it tolerable. Two more years till fuck all y'all for me!

  15. I hope that the solar eclipse means the President will be assumed - body and soul - back into the hellmouth that spawned him.

    Get well soon, Geege!

  16. I totally remember that water fountain thing. We had to go as a class and you were timed. If you took too long Sister Madeline would cut you off! Ha!!

  17. YES. There's is nothing more anti-American can carrying confederate and Nazi flags. Those are LITERALLY the ENEMIES of past wars. You are not a "good" American, you racist fuck. You're a racist fuck.

Oof. Send your puppy-babes some good, healing vibes <3 !!

  18. I hope Geege feels better ASAP! Poor little guy! Hope you and Jana have fun at the shore this weekend, how awesome!

  19. That e-card is life. One thing that I keep thinking about is about how it's taboo in Germany to make the salute (even jokingly), promote the symbolism, etc. All the relics have been put in museums, and all children are required to visit concentration camps while in school because they don't want a repeat of history. What must they think when they see this stuff happening in the US? It blows my mind that so many people treat this human atrocity so cavalierly and then say that it's not about racism.... wake up, America.

  20. The world is so messed up right now and honestly all I am hoping for is to educate those are me on why this is not okay. And that makes me so sad that they don't immediately see how wrong it is. Hate is wrong....why don't they get that?

On another note- I apparently need to get to making soap!

  21. Great job soap making! I totally remember the drinking fountain issue. As a mom, I'm so glad my kids are allowed water bottles at their desks in school now. Slow claps to the anti-fascist post! I hope all the dogs are doing ok!!

  22. That awesome that you made your own soap! I think about doing stuff like that then I think about all he other things I try to do and tell myself to calm down haha. Did you scent it?
