Six things I've learned in six years of blogging

1. Old habits die hard. I'm at the point where even if I stopped publicly sharing blog posts, I feel like I'd still do TWTW and Thursday Thoughts post weekly, as well as a Show Us Your Books and Shit MFD Said post monthly. They're how I keep track of my own life even if no one else were to read them. I've liked keeping tabs on things since I was a little girl.

 2. People know more about me than I will ever know about them. I used to feel paranoid like how do they know that before the  you wrote it on the Internet for God and everyone to read realization hit.

3. I have zero desire to be a professional blogger. If you read this, cool, if you have no idea I have a blog, cool. If you follow me on Instagram cool, if you don't, cool. I started a blog for myself and I continue it for myself. If people enjoy it that's a bonus. I'll post a sponsored post every once in a while to pad my charity donations only if people who approach me about it do not require me to look up shit like reader metrics or care about a blog owner that curses and says whatever the fuck she wants.

4. I come across the same here as I do in person. That is one of my only requirements I make of myself in this space, and I know I deliver because the people close to me let me know if I do not. We do not harbor fools in my circles and people who try to be something they are not on the internet are fools. If I can't be authentic I can't post it.

5. Pretty much every topic has been covered by someone somewhere before. We are human, it is normal for us to have commentary on the same human things. It is not common to bite off of someone in lieu of being yourself. As long as you know the difference you're fine.

6. I still hate blogging about blogging. It feels awkward as fuck, which is probably why I've never shone a spotlight on the anniversary of this blog before.

I'm giving away $60 to one person to celebrate this not momentous occasion. You can take that in cash, a gift card, a donation to the charity of your choice in your name, or a combination of any of the three.

  2. Blogging is a habit that I just cannot give up... I've walked a way a few times and I always, always come back.

  3. Congrats on your 6 years. I love your candid voice because of your sincerety. I do believe that manners will take a person a long way. Yet I am who I am and try to be a better me than the day before. I am an avid reader and can't think of a place I'd rather read than on the beach. We do have a common ground. I love this post and thanks so much for this opportunity. Congrats again.

  4. The shore stuff & shit MFD said are definitely my favorite posts! Amen to the old habits dying hard. For 2.5+ years I've been linking up with Friday Favorites but I was getting bored with it & wanted to do something different. Yet, when I sat down to type last night I basically combined "Humpday Confessions" & "Friday Favorites" instead of what I sort of had planned.

  5. I love and look forward to your blogs. They are the best blogs in the universe and not just because you are my daughter. Sometimes I feel like I would like to be a blogger. Don't stop❣️☮️ 💖😇✨☮️🦄🍀❣️ Love. Your. Momma.

  6. Just the other day a FB memory came up and it was from your Thursday Thoughts. It was from 2 yrs ago. I didn't realize I was such a loyal reader.

  7. I'm a recent follower but I like how you tell it like it is. I'd see the professional blogs and know that I'd never be able to do that so I didn't really do much on mine until the past few months. Thanks for putting it all out there and not whitewashing any of it -- it gives motivation/inspiration to those (me) still getting used to sharing thoughts with whomever wants to read them (and if they don't, cool).

  8. I did not know about the homesweetshore IG account! I would've followed a long time ago. I love reading the "Shit MFD said" -- In fact, while I read it, I swear I can see you 2 sitting in whatever environment it is. Car, house,etc.. Cracks me up!

  9. #2, for real. But, when people don't read, I'm like.. I wrote about this, go read it. Especially my family. They expect me to tell them about all those details? Meh.
#4 is also my goal. From what I've been told, I do a pretty good job being the same on the blog as in RL. *blogger high five*

  10. I also have no desire to be a professional blogger. I like my blog just as it is.

  11. Never miss your blog, even if it's a catch up read... love it!

  12. Gosh it's been a long time, hasn't it? I was 2012, I think it was may or June. Woof. Well happy 6 years to you! I'm the same on the blog and in person too. Most of my original readers were my friends who I just made subscribe to all my posts. So if it didn't sound like me I'm sure they would have been like 'wtf am I reading??'

  13. I don't comment as much as I used to, but I always love reading your blog, and you know I love your realness. Happy Blogoversary!

  14. I don't comment much since we chat elsewhere, but I love reading TWTW, Shit MFD said, and Thursday thoughts. ❤ Carla

  15. Happy 6 years of blogging! I hope you never stop. Every time I come here I feel like I'm just hanging out with you in real life, which I find super refreshing.

  16. Here's what I know. I met you over 20 years ago and your honesty, intelligence, and zero fucks attitude have not wavered at all and if you came across as someone different than how you are in real life, I would be concerned

  17. My blogging comes in waves; there are times it's all i want to do, then ... nothing. like these days...just nothing; no urge or anything interesting for me to blog about. happy 6yrs!

  18. Coming out of secret stalking for this one- happy blogiversary!

  19. I like your posts about shore trips, renovations, the causes you are passionate about and where you call people out in your unique way. We don't harbor fools, I dig it.

Oh and my favorite scene in dirty dancing is when she's dancing on the bridge trying to learn the moves. Reminds me of me when I can't figure something out, but I'm not quite as cute ;)!

  20. 6 years. Damn, woman.
I think I've been blogging off and on for about 6 years, but LaL has only been around since 2015 I think. I, too, blog because I like it. My sis-in-law is a professional blogger and she's wonderful at it, but that isn't for me.
I also think I'm pretty much the same on my blog and off it, although I come across a tiny bit more thought out and refined since I can proofread my words/thoughts. Ha!

  21. I love everything about your blog. I read it every day and just nod my head. If you ever stopped blogging, I think I would ask you to still text me sunrise pictures. I can't get enough.

    ReplyDelete
  22. You were EXACTLY the same in person, which was awesome! I'm with you on having no interest in being a pro blogger and hating to write about blogging. I do it to keep tabs on myself, hold on to memories and ideas or goals for myself only. I actually can't remember when or how I found your blog, but it's been quite a while now! Happy blog-a-versary!

  23. I enjoy reading your blog posts! Keep em coming!!

  24. Congrats on your six years of blogging. I love reading your blog.

  25. So I've never seen dirty dancing. I love your numbered posts or bucket list stuff. They inspire me to do awesome things. I'm not even sure how i stumbled upon your blog, but i love it. you inspire me to stay loud, and resist. Thanks for continuing the fight.

I'm happy you found me too - it helps all of us to hear someone that makes us think hmm...I'm not alone.

  27. Happy 6 years! I just enjoy reading what you write. You also fire me up when I need firing up about certain things. And I have not watched Dirty Dancing in so long I can't answer that question. Have a fantastic weekend!

  28. happy anniversary! i like all of you posts, does that count? favourite DD scene... the scene where they hit noses/faces when they are practicing and he keeps telling her to look at his eyes. makes me laugh every time. i haven't watched it in ages so i might need to watch it again.
hell yes to #3. i feel like some people don't get that, and they push their agendas and it's like.. it's okay to not want to do this professionally. i don't mind free stuff or whatever if it's something i'd actually use but i have no desire to be a 'big' blogger.

    ReplyDelete
  29. So how did I not know you had a shore instagram account??? I seriously missed that some how. My favorite Dirty Dancing scene will forever be "Nobody puts baby in the corner." And the lift :) I don't understand how people have the time to pretend they are something they are not. I can't do that either. Happy six years of blogging!!!

  30. I've been reading your blog for the past 3 years. I love your book recommendations and always look forward to show us your books on Tuesday

  31. Happy anniversary! Love your blog. I have been following for quite awhile and your authenticity and ability to connect with others is so unique.

  32. You're right: It's all been blogged about before.

And I tell more to my blog than I do to my family. Just because I expect them to read my blog at this point lol.

  33. Six years is amazing! This is my favorite kind of blog. I prefer hearing about someone's true thoughts and day to day life so much more than a style post or those pinterest type posts!

  34. I love reading your blog. It always brightens my day and usually gets a good guffaw out of me. Love love love!

  35. I don't comment. Steph, but I LOVE reading your blogs!!!!

  36. Yay for six years!! I agree about the everything being said, lately I feel like I come up with this awesome original topic and then I see it in three different places! Didn't realize you had a shore account.

  37. favorite scene? I can't pick just one haha! seriously, congrats on 6 years :) I love reading your blog.

  38. Hey, girl! Happy six years!

I suffer a bit from that paranoia (knowing that ppl that I don't know now have the potential to know a lot about me). Glad to know it's common. Perhaps I'll get over it in time. :)

(PS.. My favorite scene is when Baby is in Johnny's cabin spilling her heart out saying that she's scared of walking out of there and never feeling again in her entire life the way that she feels when she's with him.)

  39. Congrats on hitting 6 years of blogging! I'm about to make it to 5 years and feel like I just started a year or two ago. Time flies. Never stop Shit MFD Says....always has me cracking up! xo Emily @ Martinis & Bikinis

  40. Happy six years! I'm so glad I found your blog and your voice - thanks for keeping it real. And yes, it's much better when you stop checking analytics.

  41. I tried a blog once, just for fun, it lasted two posts and I was out of ideas! It is harder than it looks, but if you are doing it just to say what you want to, that is the kind of blog that is good to read, too.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Happy 6 years!! I do love your authenticity... and S#*t MFD Says. Oh, and the pugs. The authentic pugs.

  43. Happy 6 Years of Blogging. What I like best about you is your honesty. Honesty is like a lost art these days. I too blog for fun, if you want to read great, if you don't you don't. Man your sunrise/sunset pictures get me every time. Ok, Dirty Dancing, my favorite part is when Johnny says No one puts Baby in a corner. Ha! Love to quote that all day long.

  44. I never even knew you had another IG account. Nice! Following!
    Congrats on 6 years!!!

  45. Blogging about blogging was interesting to me for like 4 minutes -- also during the brief window in which I thought I might make some money off my blog, back when I was deeply entrenched in the idea that every damn thing had to be a "side hustle" and I let people convince me anything I spent time on had to earn me money (but I digress) -- and never was again. Never will be again, either. Blogging is fun but as soon as it's a requirement it, like most other things, stops being as much fun.

Happy 6 years, and thanks for being one of the reasons I'm happy I have a blog and therefore a spot in this community.

  46. Congrats on 6 years - that is pretty impressive!

  52. And I'd read you as long as you post, whether I'm in a blog slump or not, or commenting or not, I still physically type in certain blogs and read them - you're one.

Blogging about blogging is the most awkward thing in the world. I can't.

  53. I've had this bookmarked for a while because I didn't want to miss it and I'm glad I didn't -- I relate so much to all of this. We blog for very similar reasons and that reason is why I've continued to religiously read and check in because I know I'm not going to see anything disingenuous or straight up advertising. I've stopped reading SO many blogs over the years because they became a business; one I don't have an interest in. Cheers to many more years!
