Alternate title: when you want a manwich but aren't down with a canwich.
Ingredients
1/2 red onion, diced
1 medium yellow bell pepper, diced
1 medium orange bell pepper, diced
1 lb ground chicken
1 lb ground beef
1.5 cups ketchup
2 TBS brown sugar
1 TBS chili powder
1 TBS ground mustard
1 TBS garlic powder
1 tsp garlic salt
1 TBS Worcestershire sauce (more to taste)
1/2 Cup water
Hot sauce (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
Brown beef and chicken over medium high heat, drain off fat. Drop in onion and pepper. I sometimes do this in the reverse - saute onion and pepper then cook the meat - it depends on if I want my veggies soft or deeper in flavor. If you do saute, add a little butter or olive oil first.
Add ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire, all spices, and water. Stir to combine.
Simmer for 20 minutes, adding salt and pepper to taste and adjusting spices to your taste. If you want, add a dash of hot sauce.
Serve on a nice roll or by itself next to a salad or over rice. I kept some out for dinner and froze two portioned out for two for future use.
Growing up, I remember asking my mom "What's for dinner?" and feeling such DREAD when she would say sloppy joes haha! But, those were always from a can. These, however, sound delicious, so I might have to give them a try!
ReplyDeleteYum! How did I never think to add brown sugar, definitely trying that next time :)
ReplyDeleteYum! I've never attempted making sloppy joes but much prefer it home cooked. I like that you used a mixture of ground beef and chicken.
ReplyDeleteThis warms my cold yankee heart!! My Grandmothers both made their own homemade sloppy Joe recipes and they were amazing. I always loved them. My weirdo kids do not appreciate it.
