Self Gifting
Does everyone give themselves birthday gifts? I hope so. I think it's important to treat yo'self and that means different things to everyone. To some people it means actual gifts, and to other people it means time off or experiences. I am fiercely protective of my time and try to keep on top of my experiences too, which usually leaves me with material gifts during birthday month.
Some years are lean and I end up with nail polish as my gift to myself. Other years I save or save gift cards and go nuts. This year I'm turning 40. Spoiler alert: it's a go nuts year. But even in the years when I don't have any money to spare, I know I am worthy of gifts not only during my birthday month, but all year long, gifts like
extra time to do what I want or nothing at all
more walks outside
breathing my way to a quieter mind
more time spent in the company of people who make me laugh...and my dogs
loosening up my schedule so I have more time to recharge
additional books requested from the library
some time spent researching free events in my area I'd like to take advantage of
20 minutes to spare on a Sunday to apply a face mask
Putting off chores to get more sleep
Because the best things in life ARE free. And we all deserve these things. As for the not-free stuff of this particular birthday month...
First Aid Beauty Hello FAB Caffeine Matcha Wake Up Wipes, Urban Decay Eyeshadow in ABC Gum (thanks Amy!), Clinique Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen for face, and my free birthday gift - Tarte lip and cheek set and a deluxe sample of Jack Black mint & shea butter lip balm with SPF 25.
Lou & Grey Poplin shorts for bumming around on sale for $26. And I used my $15 off LOFT birthday coupon. Oh, and the day I ordered these they were $44. The next day they were 40% off. You better believe I called and retracted my birthday coupon and ordered them again at the sale price. Honestly I hate shorts but they're a must at the shore.
Not really birthday related, but I did buy this stuff in March and nothing says adult birthday like furniture, right? We're redoing the downstairs porch at the shore this year. We bought two chairs last year and used two chairs from home that were on their way out along with a table that's seen better days. The salt air is a real bitch when it comes to longevity of things. I'm replacing the chairs and table that were from home with this set from Target. On sale, holller. I hope they're comfortable or that will be a real pain in the ass for MFD to assemble them then un-assemble them so I can return them. I've also ordered these cushions and pillows to replace the drab ones that came with it - I won't know if they'll work until I get them, so stay tuned.
In the spirit of spreading the self love throughout the month, I'm waiting on the arrival of a Dakine backpack that I got half off at eBags to give my aging back a break (thanks Lisa for the rec). And not yet purchased, but I'm filling my Nordstrom cart with some things from my wishlist so I can take advantage of triple points later this month.
How do you treat yo'self for free, and if you're spending cash, what is your favorite thing to buy yourself?
I say treat yo self! Loving the free and non free ways that you plan to do so. Those shorts are super cute! Most of my summer shorts are from Loft, and even better with 40% off plus the birthday coupon!
ReplyDeleteIt is so important to treat yo self! Love your ideas for free gifts. That UD shadow color is pretty!!! Love your new shore furniture too. Yay birthday month!
ReplyDeleteextra treat yo'self on your 40th year is a must! enjoy!!
ReplyDeletePerfume is my treat. I love when there is a giveaway, too. Can't wait to be at your shore house at Easter. I will make Easter dinner. I'm so darn happy and grateful for everything, and extra grateful for this shore house in my favorite place and that Easter 🐣 is later this year❣️☮ thanks to the universe 💖😇☮✨. Love. Your. Momma
ReplyDeleteYes to birthday or any day treats. Mine? A "fancy" coffee at Starbucks is a treat when I have accumulated enough points so that it's free. The first Cadbury Creme Egg (and hopefully one of the few) of the Easter season. Cheers to 40 and for me, the best decade of my life so far.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely like that furniture set. I love using my birthday as an excuse for extra treats. Mine are normally more food or service related (like pedicures) because I'm indecisive and not good at shopping.
ReplyDeleteThe first time I read that about Matcha, I thought it said mocha. I was thinking your coffee addiction had reached epic porpotions. I'm trying to think what my favorite pick me up/ splurge is... and I've got nothing. Off to investigate yours.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any one particular thing I treat myself with. Sometimes it's Starbucks, sometimes it's nap, sometimes it's a fancy dinner or even a trip. All depends on mood and money.
ReplyDeleteFor my 40th, the only thing I want is a trip to Australia. Not sure how that'll work out.
Hooray for birthday month! This is definitely a go nuts year, I hope you enjoy. I'm not a shorts person either, but those are pretty cute. Good thing you noticed the sale price!
ReplyDeleteI treat myself with (at least) one day off from work. I honestly don't remember the last time I worked on my birthday. I would have done the same thing with those shorts, but luckily there's a company that does it for you- Paribus. If a price drops on an item after you bought it, they send you an email, contact the store, and credit you the difference. It's awesome! Bre mentioned that Jack Black lip balm in Add It To My List last week. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it.
ReplyDeleteMy best free treat is to take the time to sit on my porch with a book & coffee... my happy place.
ReplyDeleteMy best money spending treat? Anything Beauty & the Beast ;)
Every single year I always buy myself some Kendra Scott jewelry. I mean if you go into the store you get 50% off of one item, how could you not splurge on yourself!
ReplyDeleteI am a big believer in treating yourself to a birthday gift! It's a must in my book! Some of my favorite past birthday gifts are jewelry, a new book (bought not borrowed), a nice purse and a full-on spa day.
ReplyDeleteThe best free treats - deck time when the weather allows and time spent in the mountains of WV. $ treats - watching movies on the theater's big screen and season tickets to the touring musicals that come through Louisville.
ReplyDeleteWhen we first got married I wouldn't buy myself new shoes, even if I needed them. I wore the same work clothes all the time and made wishlists for household objects that I'd never buy myself. That's changed a bit in the last year. Half because we're better off financially and half because I've realized that there's absolutely no shame in buying something you like.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Month to you!!
I'm all about gifting myself time, experiences, whatever I need to treat myself from time to time. And yes, birthdays -esp milestone ones!- deserve some extra. I might have to get myself a pair of those LOFT shorts... I hate wearing shorts in general but those do look comfy and good for summer.
ReplyDeleteI love that you love your birthday! It always bums me out when people don't want to celebrate it...why not?? It's the one day of year that's about you - who cares about that pesky ol' 'getting older' thing. I don't know that I buy myself birthday gifts BUT I do treat myself and celebrate and still have "parties." Enjoy your birthday month!
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that it's okay to treat yourself! I do and I'm not afraid to admit it haha.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of treating yourself! I love to take $10 or $15 cash, an iced coffee, and see what I can find at the thrift store! I got a backpack for Christmas because my back and shoulders were suffering from my heavy work tote, and I LOVE it. First I love having my hands/arms free when I'm walking to and from the office, and it is so much more comfortable!
ReplyDeleteYes to treat yourself, especially during birthday month! Go nuts girl, and enjoy every second of it <3
ReplyDeleteI absolutely believe in treating yourself as often as possible. I just ordered furniture for our little balcony and I can't wait for it to show up. I went the Target route too. We have a very tiny balcony, but I'm hoping to make the most of it, because it's outdoor space in NYC.
ReplyDeleteI'm absolutely all about gifting to myself for my birthday and Christmas. I'm pretty sure my husband hates it because he always asks me what I want, but I've already bought it for myself. You look fantastic for almost 40 by the way!
ReplyDeleteThe patio set looks perfect for the shore house. We've been on a roll with doing birthday trips so no big gifts but of course shopping happens here and there all year long.
ReplyDeleteThis is extremely helpful info!! Very good work. Everything is very interesting to learn and easy to understood. Thank you for giving information.
