Thursday Thoughts - DNC in the hizzy, may contain politics

1. You know what I'm sick of? I know, I know...here we go. Men patronizing women in political discussions. No, we do not need you to mansplain things to us like we have no idea how the world works. Your air of superiority is unfounded and ludicrous. All aboard! The next ship to Asshole Island leaves soon, carrying all passengers who patronize women.

2. I'm also sick of: the word "libtard," sweating, SEPTA's unfixed regional rail issues, chipped nails, fruit that goes bad too quickly, wasting a day on a pain in the ass wild goose chase, stupid questions, forgetting items at the store when I do actually make it there instead of ordering online.

3. Puppies and kittens puppies and kittens. Here are photos of my dogs riding home from the shore. And a fucking hilarious photo of Meryl Streep done up as Trump. I've been laughing like a hyena ever since I first saw this.

4. Tuesday I took a cab over to Rock the Vote's Truth to Power pop-up art exhibition at 990 Spring Garden. Powerful. I wish I could share everything I saw, but we'd be here for days. Rosie Perez sighting: she stepped in a photo I was taking and apologized. LOL
5. It's been very cool to have the DNC in town. It has been a pain in the ass for car traffic, but perfectly okay to get around on foot. I'm really proud of what I've seen this week - the professional, composed, and engaged PPD diffusing situations/giving directions/helping people, all in the heat, with a smile and nod for people as they walk by, even those who are actually protesting police; protesters exercising their right to assemble; people standing on the street corners talking politics with citizens from other areas of the country (the gentleman in the patriotic jacket below is a Bernie delegate from Palm Beach, we chatted on Market Street); and feeling people just engage. I was at Truth to Power Tuesday and walked around the City Hall area to get back to my office. Today I'm going to see what's up around Independence Hall. Some snippets from the streets:
6. I feel like Jon Stewart popping back every other second like a manic fool with yet more political commentary. What can I say, I'm a political animal and I think this is an intensely interesting time in our country. I believe third and fourth political parties will emerge in the next decade. People on both sides of the aisle are ready for it. I also think the people might be ready to re-engage and do their part to ensure that the government is not the inmate who is running the asylum. Bernie chose to run as a dem because even that progressive knew that an independent was not going to win this race. Senator Sanders showed heart and class and tremendous love for country this week. And he will continue to work for the people like he's always worked for the people because that's what Bernie Sanders does. It's what he's about. To the Bernie Bros, I absolutely understand feeling devastated when your person doesn't win and wants you to now believe in another person. I also believe in standing on principle but not when a Supreme seat is vacant and at least one more will likely vacate this presidential term. I do not want a racist, misogynist, bully, probable rapist, screaming xenophobe and his buddy the woman hater to be filling those seats almost as much as the rabid Killary haters don't want her in the White House. How do I feel about Hillary? Sort of like this. I'm not voting for her because she's a woman just like I never voted for anyone else because they were a man. What a fucking weird thing to be accused of. It's not the penis or vagina club, it's the fucking presidency. I'm voting for her because I think she's the best person on the ballot for the job. I won't tell you you're fucking crazy for voting for Trump if you don't tell me I'm fucking crazy for voting for Hillary. I will ask, if you're voting for Trump because he's a businessman, please read or listen to Bloomberg's speech at the DNC. The beauty of this country is voting for whoever the fuck you want because you're still allowed to do so at this time. If Trump wins, it might be the last time. Use it wisely.

7. A little mid-week food prep of egg muffins with asparagus and shredded cheese and greek orzo salad with tomatoes/cucumbers/kalamata olives/goat cheese/olive oil. I meant to make other stuff but we need to eat our farmer's market haul AKA eat 609 pieces of white bread toast as a vehicle for tomato sandwiches. I also made a big batch of cold brew iced coffee.
8. I strongly identify with this from The Reading Room.

9. Reminder:

10. E-card of the week.

Seems fitting.

  1. I could happily read a post of yours sharing commentary and photos from "snippets from the streets". The news I get...even though I read from a number of news sites (and countries of origin) are all still showcasing the ugliness. What you said in paragraph #5 and the pics you shared in the first slice of positivity and hope that I've seen/read/heard in a while concerning this election.

  2. Hahaha a tissue for your issue. I am so sick of produce going back to quickly too! How can you buy some delicious looking raspberries on Sunday afternoon and find them covered in mold Monday evening? What is this trickery? It is certainly an interesting time in our country with the election coming up. I think this is the most debated one yet.

  3. Awesome post once again. The beauty of this country is freedom to vote for who we please. It is certainly not a perfect situation. JMJ, there is no perfect situation, no one wanted to be Prime Minister of England , even the guy who led the Brexit parade. God and Goddess speed for all to be safe and sound all the way around someday soon. When the low hits, we have to stay high ! (Thanks to FLOTUS Michelle for
That thought- thoughts are things-think positive) Happy Friday Eve. I just realized I was TBT-ing all day yesterday on Instagram and it was Wednesday !!!! Love. Your. Momma !!

  4. I love your #6 and I agree with you wholeheartedly. Love that you've gotten to participate in and experience so much of the DNC being in town--plus that art! Amazing! I love the reminder in number 9. Amen sister!

  5. THIS: I'm not voting for her because she's a woman just like I never voted for anyone else because they were a man. What a fucking weird thing to be accused of. It's not the penis or vagina club, it's the fucking presidency.
You, my friend, are a genius.

  6. I love the Ohio donkey :) And I'm with you in raising all the middle fingers to mansplainers. And the "you're voting for her because she's a woman" thing. Yes, I'm thrilled that women are allowed out of the kitchen to run for president, but I'll vote for whoever I feel is most well-equipped to run the county. Their anatomy doesn't matter to me. (That said, I think the piece of trash dick the GOP suddenly rallied behind isn't the person I want making my laws and running my military.)

  7. I LOATHE when I read a book & find out its in a series & I have to wait... I have so many books on my shelf that are part of series that I Refuse to start until they are all out. I lived that with Harry Potter. i dont want to do it again (though here I am waiting for Saturday to get the new HP book) ;) haha

I would have LOVED to see that exhibit. It does look so powerful.

Preach it! I love when Sarah Silerman told the Bernie supporters they are being ridiculous. I get it - you wanted your guy to be the nominee - but its like they said, those same supporters turning against Hillary is going to ensure Trump wins. This is just all a nightmare.

  8. I had the most frustrating moment this week when I went to the store with a list had my list out the entire time I was shopping and got home only to realize I didn't get one of the items. Major face palm! I can't imagine how powerful that Truth to Power exhibit is in person-- just seeing the pictures is really moving.

  9. Love the DNC coverage! I also loved Bloomberg's speech. I feel a tiny bit weird to have plans tonight and be bummed about missing the rest of the convention on TV. I hope people who read your blog, even if they disagree with you politically, appreciate the thoughtfulness with which you share your opinions and the articles you share. We'll just have to call you Steph Stewart til the election is over.

  11. What a great post!!!!! So true about Bernie. People are disgusted that he turned around to support Hillary, but that's what a mature person does when he loses... Now the party has to unite to make sure a lunatic doesn't move into the white house. Any third party votes help the lunatic. It burns me up to have to vote for someone I don't trust, but I won't be a part of helping the lunatic. Bernie knows that.
    And what great pics!
And your whole post made me feel less awful about the state of the country... thanks for that!

  12. I was thinking about you this week, wondering how the DNC impacted life in Phiadelphia. I am glad to hear that you have had a positive experience.

  13. Yes to the fruit going bad so quickly... what the heck!? It has happened way too often to me lately and I'm so disappointed every time- lol! Love the #9 reminder-- needed that!

  14. NUMBER 6!!! All the praise hands emojis for you. I was wondering what the comments section would look like, because in posts that are vague about the election (as in, don't state who they are voting for) the comments are FULL of anti-Hillary sentiments. But it seems people really respect you too much to do that (even those who may hate HRC), which is awesome!

  15. My favorite posts are the ones you write like this! I agree with your last point especially.

  16. i love your snippets from the streets, and everything you said in #6. i wish more people thought like you. i also love that link you shared about Hilary, that was hilarious.

  17. #4. I am so envious of you. What an amazing opportunity and every single one of those photos is so powerful, I can't stand it. I so wish I were there! #6. preach. love this post!

  18. Yes yes yes!

The images in #4: wow! Those really are powerful.

I was actually wondering how it would be to have the DNC in town, so I'm glad you shared a little about that. :-)

And #6 ... Oh man. I don't think I've actually been afraid that a certain candidate would win until now. Yes, I've always had my preferred candidate ... But I've never felt actual FEAR until Donald Trump was officially the Republican nominee.

As for voting for Hillary because she's a woman, thankfully no one has accused me of that ... YET. I'm sure it will come at some point. The thing is, it's amazing to see a woman on the ballot. It really is. But, like you, I like to use my vote for the person I feel is best for the job. In this race, that person happens to be a woman.

  19. I bet the energy is really exciting in Philly right now, I'm happy with the more upbeat tone this week. I am excited that a female has a viable chance to be President but no, that is not the only reason I would ever vote for someone. Sh*t, I was proud watching Carly Fiorina up there (during debates) going to bat against all men on the stage with vigor but I would NEVER have voted for her just based on her stances on things. So there's def. a difference between all of that. I don't have bad feelings about Hill but I think she'd do a good job without being overly glorified by her, maybe that will change. The Obamas however, I will severely miss. Why are dogs so cat like? Always sleeping!

  20. I really, really hope that you are right about a third or forth party emerging in the next decade. I am so freaking ready to finally have a party I could actually identify with.

  21. I think since now that I know your voice from listening to your podcast, I read these in your voice and I find myself really wanting to sit around with a cup of coffee discussing politics with you. Co-signing all of it. Thank you especially for that wonderful Medium article!

  22. Sometimes I get tired of the people in my twitter feed getting all riled up but you know what? I'll take it. I'll take it over apathy any day. Whatever gets people to vote. I'm not voting for Hilary. She's not my cup of tea, regardless of her gender. I'm voting for Gary Johnson and if ONE MORE FUCKING PERSON tells me it's a wasted vote, I'm going to snap some necks. This is why we have a two party system. If every person who said 'I don't like either candidate but ___ is the lesser of two evils' voted for Gary Johnson, we'd have a wonderful next 4 years.

  23. I wasn't planning on voting for Hillary, despite her being a woman, until I took a closer look at why everyone seems to hate her and realized there is no good reason. The way people refer to her is so much harsher and more negative than the way they'd refer to a man with a similar career. It's ridiculous. I've heard so many men say she's corrupt without giving any examples, and I've definitely had someone mansplain to me that she "isn't the lesser of two evils" which means that that idiot actually considers her to be on par with Trump despite the blatant racism and bigotry that is the basis for his candidacy. But now that I'm planning on voting for her, I will admit that I find the idea of a woman president exciting. I wouldn't change my vote based on it, but I guess it's kind of a perk?

I can't stand the stupid insults people come up with for supporters of either side! "Hill schills" gives me instant rage.

  24. Dogs crawling on faces make me happy. Is that weird? Meryl is dead on and hilarious. We've had an ongoing decision of what Bill's title should be. So far we've got HOTPOTUS (husband of the POTUS) in the lead.... Yes, that's how I spent the DNC...

  25. That statistic about women being rape is a scary reality but I've seen it before and sadly it's true.
