1. My morning train conductor. His name is Sean and he's the best. Personable, professional, and always there with a greeting, but best of all when SEPTA is fucking up, Sean gives it to you straight instead of not announcing what's going on. If the train was late he even gets on the PA system after every stop to tell all the new people why it was late. Communication goes a long way.
2. My friends at the Dunkin Donuts on 16th & JFK. I go there every morning. I never have to order, they know me and what I want. When someone new starts as cashier and asks me what I want, everyone else chimes in over me. We exchange pleasantries. I head to my office with a smile every day.
3. People who know and practice public transportation etiquette. They respect your space, don't clip their toenails on the train, know you don't give a shit about their one sided cell phone conversation, let the people sitting in the seats ahead of them out when the train stops instead of rushing out like they are very busy and important like the President of the United States heading to the War Room for a Defcon Whatever Number is Most Critical meeting.
4. People with great big uninhibited laughs. I don't have to even be looking at someone who has a great laugh to smile when I hear it. You're having a good time? Something is funny? I love it. Laugh it out.
5. Curtis, the shuttle bus driver at the park & ride. Also known as the friendliest man ever. He greets everyone effusively and considers them a friend immediately. Even if my day has sucked, I have to smile when I see Curtis grinning from the driver's seat, crowing, "Hellooooooooo young lady! How was your day? My friend my friend, come on up!!"

ReplyDeletePS- people cut their nails EVERYWHERE in China. I just don't get it! I'm talking the bus, on the sidewalk, in the office, etc. I drew the line when a student was cutting nails in my classroom.

ReplyDeleteI have a guy at my office like Curtis who every time he sees me says "My angel, my angel how are you today" it is the sweetest thing and always makes me smile. People like that always make even the worst days better.
ReplyDeleteI love when folks at restaurants acknowledge that they know you. My local grocery store is like that. The deli guy knows how I like my sandwich and one lady in the bakery asks about the kids when I get to escape the house.

ReplyDeleteLove this! For me, I'd say my office building's porter/cleaner. He is always so nice and pleasant and actually engages in conversation. And then the building's security people who are friendly and just walk around and smile/say hi. :)

Awesome people!! There used to be a LAX shuttle bus driver like that. He always remembered me - even after I moved! I love the security guys at (some) of our high schools. The ones in the roughest areas are always in a good mood and sometimes they give me bear hugs. At first that was creepy, but I think they're just so damn happy to see someone trying to do something good for their kids. In the "wealthier" schools, I just get screamed at for my tardy pass.... which admittedly can feel pretty good too.

ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I love your mom because her comments on your blog always make me smile. And secondly I am pretty proud to say my dad was that guy. He was the janitor at US Surgical in Norwalk, CT for 26 years and he would always greet everyone and call them "Amigo!" I remember going there with him after he had stopped working because of his cancer and everyone was so happy to see him.
ReplyDeleteI love this! I have several people like this too. My deli guy at the grocery is super friendly and always whipping up combos and passing out samples which makes everyone happy. Plus he remembers what I like, bonus. My favorite waitress at the sports bar I frequent has my beer in front of me before I have a chance to put my purse on the back of the chair... with a smile! Food and beer... can you tell what is on my mind?

ReplyDeleteI love this idea! Getting great, friendly service and DD sounds like a wonderful start to each day. I love my work shuttle driver, Elizabeth. She's so friendly and fast and one time I told her that I was trying to get on a certain train and no one was on the shuttle so she skipped a stop and sped all the way to get me there on time. I'll never forget that. Sometimes you don't need to know know people for them to make a positive difference in your life!

Oh man, I wish that more people understood proper public transport etiquette! I hate when people (especially men) invade my personal space when I'm on the bus. Sorry, I don't want to touch you in any way shape or form on the bus because I don't know you!

ReplyDeleteThere's a blue line conductor I LOVE. He's just so happy. He gets on the PA and says 'happy humpday! Next stop Clark and Lake! Only 3 more days, we're in this together.' He has ones for every day of the week, it's too cute.

ReplyDeleteaww i love this! your train guy and shuttle guy sound fabulous. i love to hear big laughs as well, and baby laughs always make me smile too (baby screams on the other hand...). the only person i can think of like this is the security guy at work, he's very friendly. i also like people in general who practice human decency / common sense / etiquette in general lol
ReplyDeleteI love that you come across such friendly people everyday! I have friends with big laughs and they're always apologizing. I tell them I don't mind as long as they don't mind that I rarely laugh as big as they do. I tend to chuckle on the inside a lot.

ReplyDeleteFor me? The person who drives by and flashes their lights to warn of an asshole cop waiting for you to do 45 in a 40 on our road. The person who lets you in to traffic without being an asshat. The receptionist in our building who always greets me with a pleasant smile and how are you even though we work for different companies. My cashier at Target on Sundays. I watched him go through college and now he is going off to UGA for his masters. He always had polite conversation, let me know what I missed in my cartwheel and gave me extra coupons.
aw, I love this post!!! So true and a good perspective! It takes a village to get someone to work not in a bad mood, nice reminder of that! And I love big, bellowing laughs as well.

ReplyDeleteI love this post. I can't think of five off the top of my head but the first one I thought of was Leslie Sansone. No I never met her personally, however her enthusiasm and caring that comes across in her exercise DVDs have kept moving & fit. I have used other exercise DVDs but not one kept me interested like Leslie.
ReplyDeleteCarmine - one of the maintenance men at my community clubhouse, always a smile, always a "How are you, Sweetie?", and a "How's your little dog?" During the power outage after the hurricane, when everybody was there for the generator, he tended to the bewildered elderly people, kind and helpful, and friendly.
ReplyDelete"Walking guy" - I don't know him, but I see him walking around here all the time. Looks like a Nam vet, but too young. I've called him walking guy since I moved in. I found out recently he has a very serious heart condition, so when I don't see him walking I worry. When I see him walking and ask how he is, he always says he can't complain.
