Currently...January

R E A D I N G ... Under a Dark Summer Sky by Vanessa Lafaye. If you're looking for something to read, did you check out the Show Us Your Books posts on Tuesday?

L O V I N G ... that I have no plans this weekend. I have a lot of stuff to do at home and I'm excited to be able to do it at my leisure and not around commitments.

B U Y I N G ... One zillion boxes of Girl Scout Cookies this year. Have you heard of Cookiecott? The right wing nutjob anti-abortion zealots are boycotting Girl Scouts and their cookies again this year because of their association with Planned Parenthood. You know, the place that provides health services and counselling to young girls and others who can't afford it through regular GYNs. These lunatics are spreading their propaganda and picking on little girls. What kind of assholes make children pay for something they have absolutely nothing to do with? Please support your local troops, however you can. If you don't know any Girl Scouts, there are official GS cookie locator apps available. I will also instagram and tweet my purchases using #cookiecott and #morecookiesforus. Fucking assholes.

A P P R E C I A T I N G ... The awesome people who helped me raise $1,350 for Covenant House in less than a week, surpassing my goal by $350. I know some fucking amazing people. Thank you guys, so much, for supporting a cause that is really important to me. In case you missed it, I joined the team of my friends Catie & Joe to sleep out to raise awareness and more importantly cash for homeless teens. Based on a lot of reading I've done over the past year, homeless teens are the most underserved group in the homeless population. There just are not a lot of places for these kids to turn. Did you know most shelters don't take teens that show up on their doorstep without a parent? That's why places like Covenant House are so very, very important. Think about all the bullshit that happens when you're a teen...then add homelessness and the stigma and shame that come along with it to the top of that crap heap. Can you even imagine? So MFD and I will be sleeping on the street with nothing but a sleeping bag on March 18...and a sleeping bag is more than many of these kids have when they have to spend a night on the street. If you are interested in donating to support this cause, click here to help MFD reach his goal. If you have donated, thank you and your generous heart.

T A L K I N G ... to more teenagers in the past week than I have since I was a teenager myself. They all want to rent the shore house for prom/senior week. They are very charming when they are buttering me up and very petulant and life is not fair when I say no.

F E E L I N G ... the week before vacation craziness. In addition to work and life stuff, I had a fever Monday. Dude.

H E A D I N G ... into summer. The sun is rising before 6 a.m. and setting at close to 8 p.m. in South Africa. I can't wait to be with you, longer light days.

FA I L I N G ... miserably at mailing birthday cards in anything close to a timely fashion.

W A T C H I N G ... the final season of Downton Abbey. What else does one watch in January? I did watch the pilot of Billions. I freaking love Damien Lewis.

P L O T T I N G ... how we're going to reconfigure the basement in February. It's getting a total overhaul on a budget. It should be painted, but I'm not sure I can commit to that at this time. Everything else is getting moved around, purged, reorganized...it's been turning itself into a shithole over the past six months and I've let it. I'm looking forward to attacking this.

P L A N N I N G ... to make my own shaving cream this weekend, to be on Wallet Watch in February, to finish this book by Monday.

Fill me in...what's going on with you this month?

  1. 2.5 hours ago, I submitted 44 Gates Millennium apps. I'm still trying to unwind from the deadline stress. I'm currently trying to figure out who is waging a war on girls who sell cookies. That sounds like the biggest damn adult problem there ever was.

  2. I am currently reading Shotgun Lovesongs, I know you'd approve. So happy I know someone as amazing as you, to sleep out in the cold Winter to help support a great cause. You are good people! I have plenty of troop girls who sell cookies and though I am trying to eat healthy I will buy more cookies just to piss in the face of a-holes trying to turn a positive thing into something negative.

  3. I'm trying my hardest not to order any girl scout cookies...I would eat all the boxes in a matter of days!! Congratulations on surpassing your fundraising goal - that's amazing! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  4. Those jerks with the girl scout cookies....I hate how extreme people get and I feel like our country is all about extremes lately (or at least the people in power/trying to be in power). Where is the middle ground? Congrats on raising your goal $$!
I wouldn't want to rent to a bunch of teenagers for beach week either. That's a recipe for trouble, and a destroyed shore house. Eep!
Good luck getting everything done this weekend--a free weekend to be productive is the best!

  5. Yum, now I want some girl guide cookies! Hope you feel better before vacation!!!

  6. I will be painting our entire basement too, shortly. Not looking forward to it.

I can't deal with teenagers. I'm impressed that they call you themselves to try and rent the house though.

I have Downton dvr'd and haven't watched yet! And Damien Lewis will always be Brody to me (or the guy in Band of Brothers). I don't think I could watch him in anything else.

  7. I will buy tons of GS cookies. Asshole is the worst name you could call someone-stinky and shit comes out of it. May all of their dicks shrivel up and fall off -balls, too. Awesome that South Africa has all that daylight. Excited that you are going. The wildlife there!! Lights and Angels. Our little beauty queen is snoozing. We have perfect days together. Glad you have an unscheduled weekend pre-Africa. Happy Friday eve. Love. Your. Momma.

  9. Laughing about... senior week shenanigans. I certainly would not have rented to us!

    Moaning about... lottery loss

    Dreading... de-Chrismassing the house

Anticipating... my new little elephant that you will bring me

  10. You go girl . . . buy the damn cookies because it's MF'ing cookies sold by kids. Seriously, as a Girl Scout leader, I can assure you that nothing but good stuff happens in our troop so for them to dirty it up on the media, makes me rage. I'll stop now!

I'm a Downton junkie . . . just the intro music makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Also watching My 600 pound life and the Biggest Loser . . . motivation and all!

And I love that you and MFD have committed to helping teens. As a mother of a teen, the idea of homeless ones at that critical age breaks my heart. I do love and appreciate those who volunteer to help others!

  11. I'm in for a February wallet watch, I could use it. DEFINITELY no prom teenagers in the shore house, good call. That'd be a disaster.

  12. Support your local Girl Scouts! If you don't want the cookies, you give them a dollar or two. They get to keep the whole dollar whereas they only make about 50 cents per box they sell!

    1. That's a great idea Janet! Keeps the fat off of my hips and still helps them out. I like it!

  13. I just donated to MFD's page because lets face it "Shit MFD Says" are some of my favorite posts. But you have officially inspired me. I am planning on running a 40 mile ultra in March 2017 (currently pregnant so I cant do it any sooner) but I think I will plan on raising money for the Covenant House, what a great organization and I love that they are nationwide. Thanks!

  14. I love Girl Scout cookies and eff the idiots who are using it to spread their propaganda!

  15. I had you on my list this week, but since MFD needs help, I gave him my donation. You guys rule. Enjoy your weekend :)

  16. Hello... as your friend and Girl Scout Troop Leader I thank you for outing these idiots. I firmly believe in having the right to your own opinion but come on!! We are striving to teach our girls life skills thru selling cookies... setting goals, money management, running a small business just to name a few. These people need to go boycott something else!

And good luck to the teens trying to rent your house, clearly they have no idea who they're dealing with lol

  17. I cant wait for the how to make shaving cream post!!!
Someone is ALWAYS protesting something & some event. People just make me shake my head sometimes.
Smart lady being careful on renting the house on Prom weekend. That will be a mess - guaranteed.

  18. BUYING ALL THE GIRL SCOUT COOKIES! So glad you brought that up today or I might not have heard of the assholes who are trying to boycott the cookies. I will definitely by an extra box, or 10 to show them a thing or two. Also I find it hysterical that you have prom night kiddos trying to use the shore house!

  19. I can't with the cookies. Some people are fucking insane and at this point, I have outrage fatigue. Enough already with this nonsense. E's BFF is a Girl Scout and you can bet I'll be buying lots of cookies even though I'm trying to quit eating that stuff.

Teenagers make me laugh when they try to be all adult. Just...no.

  20. I always fail miserably at getting Birthday Cards out too, so I'm glad I'm not the only one. Even though I write them down, I secretly hate stopping by anywhere after work, and I think that's what gets me. Hooray for a weekend with no plans and for vacation soon! It's always crazy before taking a big trip, but all the stress will be totally worth it once you're there.

  21. I never knew the GS and PP were associated, but seriously why would that be a bad thing (well for those who are crazy, but I digress)?! I love that kids want to rent your shorehouse for prom - we stayed at a Best western (classy)!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I wouldn't want teenagers or even college kids renting my house either. That's a recipe for disaster.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Give me all the thin mints!!

I don't blame you for not wanting to rent your house out to teenagers...I also don't understand why their parents are allowing the to go rent out a house for prom...

  24. I have not heard about that Girl Scouts thing but that is complete BLEEPING BULLBLEEP. Why are people so insane? For real. I'll get some cookies too.

And that's hilarious about the teenagers, haha. There was just a story in Oakland about some kid who totally ruined his AirBNB with a party.http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Oakland-Airbnb-rental-trashed-on-New-Year-s-Eve-6734146.php

  25. Thanks for bringing my attention to cookiecott. Now I have to just track down a Girl Scout... and I mean that in the very best way possible!
I'm so glad you met your fundraising goal! As soon as some clients respond to their invoices I'll be honored to donate to MFD's fundraiser for this fantastic cause you guys are serving. Again, good on you.
Also? Good on you for not renting that beautiful house with your blood, sweat, and tears in it to high school students. My peers absolutely destroyed half the hotels in Seaside Heights when I was in high school. Not worth your energy.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You are making your own shaving cream??? I wont buy girl scout cookies for me anymore because I cant be trusted with them in the house. I can eat an entire box of thin mints in one sitting, no doubt. However, perhaps I will purchase a few boxes and donate them. Or taunt these fuckers in my building by leaving them in the break room as they have done with their damn donuts and brownies.

  27. That CookieCott thing enraged me. Oh, and now I want Girl Scout cookies. #GiveMeAllYourSamoas

  28. I had NO idea about the cookiecott thing. I wasn't planning to buy any girl scout cookies but now I feel compelled to. How ridiculous.

I'm on wallet watch-lite this month, so I probably need to go on a true one in February. Sigh.

  29. I had no idea about the cookiecott. What a bunch of BS. Going to buy Girl Scout cookies like it's my job. Packed yet? :-)

  30. jealous of your non-plans! i'm going camping. help.

  31. oh my gosh, people amaze me with their stupidity. i don't even like girl scout cookies but i will be buying some when i see them. KC loves them anyway. i'm sure i've mentioned this before, but planet parenthood was the ONLY place i could go to when i moved here. jeepers people, have some sense. rage.

yay no plans! lol @ the teenagers. haha yeah right! i'd be like 'nope, i've been a teenager, i know what you're like!'. that book sounds super interesting, added it to my list!

  32. work is sucking balls these past few weeks, that's what's up. as in it made me miss my muay thai class, i've been working ALL weekend and my family is wondering where the hell i've been. rage.

that said, looking forward to your basement redo! when you do get around to it, please post pics :D

  33. I had no idea about the Cookiecott! That's fucking insane (though I guess when I think about it a little more it's sadly not that surprising). Eric and I are trying to be a little better with our eating habits (and with our spending habits as well!), but we've already purchased a few boxes from our niece. We would have supported her anyway, but now I'm even happier that we did!

I'm glad you didn't rent your shore house out to teenagers. Even the most responsible kids can get crazy under the right circumstances, and prom and senior week seem like the right circumstances. Haha.
