How INSERT NAME HERE got her groove back

Don't you hate when people post about vague phantom quasi-problems online? I do. But I don't mind when people acknowledge moods. We owe it to ourselves to keep it real, and no one is Miss Mary Sunshine all the time. People who work hard to prove they are are lying liars who lie.

Me? Currently I'm in a whatever period.

It's a general feeling of being restless, distracted, disinterested, in between, too many balls in the air, on auto pilot. I could also sum this up in general by saying whatever it is, I don't feel like it.

I don't feel this way often and when I do, it doesn't last long. Seriously, thank God. Since I'm a Veruca Salt I want it now control freak, it makes me uncomfortable in my own skin because it's just not me. It requires patience I don't have, leaving me feeling stretched, exhausted, and irritable. If people ask me what's wrong I get surly. I need to get over myself.

The common ground here between you and me and the world is that we all have these periods. Nothing is wrong per se, but we're just in a mood, okay?

The uncommon ground is what we do to turn those frowns upside down. I'm always interested in seeing how other people, particularly other women, go about small doses of self care to ground themselves and return to center. So I hope you'll share your top three mood changers with me in the comments below. I'll be doing my patented top five this weekend:

1. Lose myself in a book or several books, ignoring everything around me.
2. Cook up a storm.
3. Paint my nails.
4. Spend a lot of time with my dogs, including outside time.
5. Organize something and clean something.

And fuck it, I'm getting a massage too. And having lunch with my girlfriends. And trying to make MFD do something fun. And only wearing lounge attire. And going to see my niece. The massage and the niece and something fun only if I kick this bastard chest cold tonight.

How do you get back to you when you're feeling un-you-ish?

  1. I like to take a day off and never leave the couch, reading. If all else fails getting my house in order resets my balance. Hope you find a way to get back to you.

  2. Good for you--do whatever it is that you need to do to get yourself out of the funk. A massage, doing nails, reading, etc sounds perfect to me! Hope you have a nice relaxing weekend!

  3. I love the way you put this. I go through phases, less now that I'm older thank goodness, but I used to sink so low it was hard to get myself out. I would normally resort to binge eating bad food, which naturally made me feel like crap. Now, I grab a book and curl up and do nothing for a day. I call my mum or nana. I cuddle with my cats and try and make KC do something fun as well lol. He used to be like ugh no but now he knows just a quick trip to the bookstore or even target will make me feel better. Sometimes I just get restless. It's weird. Anyway. A book, cats and a cup of tea normally sets me right. Considering my life is all books/cats/tea recently, that might be why I haven't felt down lately lol. I'm preventing it ;)
I hope you kick the cold soon, and get back to you soon. Have a good weekend :)

  4. I know these moods well. The real bad ones are best handled by a change of scenery. I also like to completely clear my calendar of the "have to" list and only do what I want to do. Or sleep. My moods are generally enhanced by sleep deprivation.

  5. How you deal with it is pretty much exactly how I do, too. I'm sorry you're in a "whatever" mood--it happens and it'll pass soon <3

  6. When I'm in a funk, as I describe it, I talk to someone close... that always brings me back to center and gratitude. I try to focus more on eating healthy, I stay in pajamas as much as possible and sleep as much as possible. I read and pet my pets. If I have the energy, I garden.
And I wait for it to pass, because it does. Life is good.

  7. This is very relatable. I have different kinds of funks, so treatment varies, but for a short term "blah" it's usually books and shutting myself away from everyone and everything for a day. For a long term it's usually because I need more sleep or exercise or sometimes just time for it to blow over. The plus side is, when you do finally come out everything will feel that much better or more exciting, because you just in a less upbeat place!

  9. 1. Cleaning. When everything is in its place, I instantly feel better.
    2. Laying quietly in my bed. 15 minutes of this after a bad day usually changes my mood.

If those things don't work I just own my bad mood. You need the bad moods to appreciate the good moods. I warn everyone around me and try to remember that I can't control my feelings, but I can control how I act and the things I say. It also helps that Aaron is really good at ignoring me and never adds fuel to my fire.

  10. I so wish cleaning and organizing got me out of one of my moods! I call them my funks (yes, they happen so often I have named them) and I need a good 10-11 hours of sleep, for my husband to be extra nice, and a few hours of being awake and doing what I want to do without chores or obligations to feel like I have regained some kind of control. I hope your funk and your cold are on their ways out already!

  11. For me, when I'm in any kind of funk, the answer almost always is my girlfriends. I need at least a day, but preferably a weekend, away from real life. I need that weekend to be filled with a variety of the following: day drinking, shopping, spa appointments, uncontrollable giggling, fabulous meals out, and sunshine.

  12. So, for me, it's recognizing if it's a funk or if I can feel something anxiety/depression related coming on. If it's a funk, I'll binge watch something I've been meaning to, nap, buy a new lip gloss or nail polish, read, play with the dogs, stuff like that. I'll sometimes also organize a part of the house because my funk can be brought on by the conditions in which my family keeps our home. I also allow myself a "fuck it" day or two. That helps me regroup occasionally.

If it's depression creeping in, it's mostly a matter of having many conversations with myself and changing some bad habits I might have fallen back into.

  13. I get into these funks every now and then too, and usually just ride it out on the couch with either a good book/magazine or a Netflix binge. Hope you feel better soon gurlie, Happy Friday <3

  14. I totally get like this every now and then. To be honest, it's how I'm currently feeling. I think I just need time away from everything and more sleep. Nothing a little retail therapy maybe able to help. haha. Hope you have a great weekend relaxing and enjoy your massage.

  15. We all have this mood every now and again and looks like you have the best tips to cure it. Ive recently realized that cooking is good for the soul, it really is.

  16. When I'm in a whatever mood I try to do things I enjoy doing like reading or just sitting ocean front.

Whatever moods can be so annoying.

  17. exactly right. Massage and manicure are my two go to ways to fix this mood. I generally struggle with reading when I am like this which makes me even MORE crabby!! a glass of wine helps too.

  18. Waking up without an alarm and being able to sleep any time I want usually is my go-to fix. I say fuck all the things I "have" to do and sleep and peruse the internet and read and eat and give zero fucks about anything except feeding the critters. If that doesn't work, then I accomplish things on my to do list which often helps me feel like I'm more in control.

  19. Since my one and only niece lives far away- a Skype session has to do, but it definitely does! Cheers me right up. I like to soak in a hot bath with a good magazine and ignore the world for awhile too :)

  20. I totally get this. For me it's #5. I have already planned to use tonight and all day tomorrow to clean and purge and organize my house. So, when I'm done, I can gaze upon my sparkling house and light a candle and be at peace.

  21. I try to stay very busy and just keep going. I have been feeling this way lately and the difference for me is that I can usually pinpoint why. If I stop and wallow in it I get worse, I need to amp it up and find a new project, event, make plans to go to a new place. I am totally with you on the cleaning/organizing/purging. My Good Will gets to know me well during these periods!!! It is cathartic for me though!

  22. Love this! Why can't we just own how we're feeling and be real about it? Some days/weeks/months just plain suck and there's no use putting glitter on a turd! I read, watch my favorite movies (mostly Disney) and just keep to myself. When I'm "out of it" I get really quiet and just stay lost in my thoughts.

  23. I still havnt figured out what I do... I don't think I've gotten out of that mood in years now.
Your weekend sounds fantastic. I'm quite jealous... I'll do good if I get my nails done - I've also been trying for 3 weekends to do that.

  24. I was in a horrible mood and a book brought me right out of it. cooking is also therapeutic. also eating cheese...

  25. I am in such a weird state right now. I need to get out of my funk. I'm taking Sunday to do my own thing. I'm catching up on shows, I'm going to get blog stuff planned out, I'm going to talk to friends/family that I haven't in awhile. Anything that brings me some sort of normalcy to life.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I get in whatever moods from time to time as well and what you have planned sounds fabulous!!! Usually lunch with a gal pal, some dog snuggles and a good book bring me back to live. When that doesn't work....retail therapy tends to be my thing.

  27. Yep! I go through those times as well. I know at those times I need to chill/veg in front of the TV and go to bed early. Having a week's worth of doing nothing really puts me back into the mood of everything else. Have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  28. The past three weeks have left me feeling weird. My goal this weekend is to change that. I'm starting with wine and going from there.

    ReplyDelete
  29. No adulting today. That's what I call those days (or week) where I feel this way. I will go through the motions of the crap I HAVE to do until I can get a day where I do nothing. Make no decisions. I play with my dogs, go thrifting, or pray for (or pretend) it's a rainy day, stay on my couch, websurf or watch a movie/tv show(s)

  30. I have been feeling this way lately too!! I actually only have a family dinner saturday other than that I think I'll do my feel better things too. Good idea. I got a massage before our trip, hadn't had one it forever and felt so good after. You should definitely do it!

  31. I get this way too especially after vacations. It takes a while to get my groove back...hope the weekend gives you a chance to do some things on your list which will help. I love to cook as well, sleep it off, shop online and drink a glass of wine (although I'm aware the last one is just self-medicating and not the smartest thing to do but Im stubborn and will do it anyways). Hope you beat the cold too!

  32. I definitely get these spells as well. I find time alone, a weekend with absolutely no obligations, cleaning and chucking out stuff, baking, and talking to family for a bit helps. After a day inside, a day walking around somewhere pretty usually seals the deal. Hope you feel back to normal soon.

  33. I was just where you are earlier this week. For 3 days I was unattached, uninterested and generally blah. Getting myself out of that kind of a funk is tricky. What seems to work once won't work again. This time around it was a great workout and an awesome nights sleep. Sometimes it's a walk on the beach. Alone time. A good book. Going out to breakfast by myself. Whatever it is Steph I hope you find it. Chin up!

  34. I definitely get into these moods from time to time, though not as much since I started my new job and don't wake up dreading going to my previous toxic environment.

I definitely like to lose myself in a good book, TV show, or movie. Focusing on other people's problems (even fictional people) can distract me from my own apathy. Also, eating my favorite food.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I call them Blah moods. I tend to just want to sit on the couch with a blanket and a good book too, it just allows me to sort of pass the blah time without dwelling on it too much. I've found hiking can be good too if it is nice out and we have a plan for where to go, it usually helps to jolt me out. I have to say sometimes cleaning or organizing too, just something that is "fixable" in that moment, I guess controllable. Hope you get over the blahs and back to the "normal" :)

  36. Oh my. This could not have come at a better time. I had a horrible week. Some of it was actual disappointments but there was some that was just a bad mood. What helped me was a hardcore cleaning session, wine, and Skyping with a good friend. If I'd had time, I probably would have broken out one of my favorite movies and shut down social media to get lost for a few hours. That usually helps quite a bit.

  37. These seem like great ways to de-funk! When I'm in those moods, I prefer to be left alone, so reading, doing my nails, and just zoning out to music help me to reset. Hope you are enjoying a relaxing weekend!

  38. I can so relate to this post. Yoga always makes me feel more centered, so do the dogs.

  39. All good mood boosters! I was going to suggest nail painting... should've known that would be on this list! lol
If I feel "blah" during the week when I have to leave the house, I like putting on lipstick and perfume... little changes that boost my confidence and make me feel more cheery overall. Bubble baths with a warm (or alcoholic) drink. Binging on a comedy show or movies. MUSIC! Ice cream. :)

  40. I wrote a post about this last year when I was in a really similar place. When I get like this, I at first think that I want to curl up on the couch, block out the world, and watch Netflix all day. But after a bit that makes me feel worse, so I turn to some of the same things you listed: painting my nails, cleaning my apartment, rearranging or reorganizing something, reading and/or writing. Getting my body moving with a run helps too, and so does unadulterated belly-laughter. That always fixes more than I give it credit for :)
Hope you find your way out of this soon. Thanks for your never-ending honesty in this place! xo

  41. I can't wait to hear if you did all these things and if you're feeling better. Losing myself in a great novel is one of my favorites but it also helps when I spend time with people who inspire me, like I did this weekend.

  42. I kind of felt this way when I wrote my "Got a Case of the Mondays?" post a few months ago. Sometimes you just need a little something to lift your mood, especially if you're stressed or just feeling kind of "blah."

Like you, getting reading is high on my list ... I can just shut out the rest of the world and get lost in a new one. I also love listening to music and singing along. That's a guaranteed mood booster for me. Exercise (yoga in particular) is also great for my most stressful days. As soon as I begin, I'm focused on something good for myself and not on whatever is making me crazy at the moment. I know yoga isn't for everyone, but it has seriously helped me so much with my sleeping habits, depression, anxiety, and overall stress!

I hope you get out of your funk soon. I know how much it can suck to just not feel like yourself!
