life, liberty, & the pursuit of happiness

This weekend, I'm going to do whatever I please in the greatest country in the world. Fourteen years ago terrorists tried to discourage us from living life the American way. We lost a great number of our fellow Americans. It hurt then. It still hurts now. We will not forget what happened that day or the people we lost. We will also never forget the awe-inspiring takes of bravery and sacrifice. That's the American way.

Unfortunately for those who sought to destroy us, Americans are resilient. Every day our best counter attack is carrying on as we do. This weekend, do it for the people who no longer have the opportunity. They would want you to. That, too, is the American Way.

  1. Reading that John Kerry quote reinforces some thoughts I was having earlier today...I was remembering the "United We Stand" mentality that sadly seems to be waining these days. I never feel like I can adequately express myself on September 11th. You did it well.

  2. I always find myself without words on this day. It is such a palpable heartache. As a teacher, I see a new generation of students who don't understand...they were infants or not even born yet themselves...how could they understand? There is a disconnect as time moves on, but we, those who bore witness, will never forget.

    Enjoy the weekend, Steph!

  3. And 14 years ago we didn't see color or race or gender or socio-economic status...we saw "American". We bonded together in a way I've never witnessed in my lifetime. I hope we can get back to that sense of unity in our nation. Very good post!

  5. I miss the post-9/11 unity. I spend a lot of time wondering how we got from there to here. I've also started working with kids who have no idea what life was like pre-9/11... and that makes me enormously and ridiculously sad.

  6. John Kerry's words are so very true. This post gave me chills. You have a way with words that I do not.

  9. It doesn't feel like it's been that long, it still brings tears to my eyes those feelings. Calling my friends to check on them.

  10. Sometimes I feel a bit like I can't say too much today.. it wasn't my country, after all. Plus, I don't think I could articulate it very well anyway. Very well said Steph. I'll do whatever I please this weekend and for as long as live.. for the US, the UK and Aus, and for all the people who have lost their lives in various terrorist attacks.

  15. Well said!!!! It is hard to believe it has been 14 years because I remember it like it just happened. I remember where I was, my initial reaction, who I spoke to that day....I remember it all! Cheers to our wonderful country and the American way!

  16. Like everyone of this generation, I remember every minute of the day 14 years ago, which makes it so hard to believe it's been 14 years now. I've always lived in a place where I can see the city skyline from my home or my town, and it's pulled at me a little bit extra this week each time I've seen it on my commute or on my run. I'm grateful every day that I left 9/11/01 unscathed, but this week is a week for reflection on those who didn't. Thanks for sharing that quote.

  19. Amen sister! I definitely enjoyed my weekend.. For whatever reason I gained great pleasure just driving this weekend, knowing I am a woman who can drive around free and with no restriction anytime of the day/night. Ah, gotta love our hard-earned freedom. Enjoy your weekend lovely! Take Care Steph -Iva

  20. I just came in from enjoying hot coffee on my patio watching the sunrise, and Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright came on Pandora and made me incredibly emotional. It's hard to believe it's been 14 years as I can still feel everything I felt like it was yesterday. Beautiful post, as always.

  21. I can't even tell you how many chills and goosebumps I got on Friday looking at posts on various social media. Seeing some of the footage brings me right back to that day. I remember feeling absolutely sick at people jumping out of windows. I cannot even imagine. :/

  22. I can't believe it was 14 years ago. It feels so much more recent. I live just across the border in Canada but visit the states all the time and because we're so close, I totally get all teary every year for all those who lost their loved ones.
