Friday Five: Scenes de la semana

TGIF my friends! It's been a week. A week in which we had a lot of unplanned expenses of the car and dog variety, a week in which I lost the battle against the dog hair in the house, a week in which I didn't get solid sleep. So yes, I'm happy to see the return of the weekend. I need a recharge.
Scenes from the week...
1. I watched all 10 episodes of the first season of Bosch in less than 24 hours, and I worked and slept a lot of those hours. So you might say I liked the show. I also watched a bunch of Laguna Beach this week. Hello, 2004. Missed you. Remember when people wore those hideous "necklaces?" Not a good look for you, KCav.
2. I love the nail place near my work. I go in at lunch and tell them I don't have much time. I get a pedicure, manicure, and brow wax and am back at my desk within 50 minutes. They rock. I'm still working through my nail polish collection and not repeating until I go through them all. I got Zoya Kristi on my toes and Essie Shop 'Til I Drop on my nails. The Essie has since been tossed because I don't need that so light it might as well be clear polish in my life. This nail polish using is forcing me to see what I like and don't so I can cull the polish herd. Always a good thing.
3. Tuesday night I was at the vet with Mae and Gus, who caused a scene like you wouldn't believe. Gus struts in there like King Shit, assuming a seat on my lap so he can see everyone before barking directly at each person and dog until they acknowledge his presence with a laugh or a cower. Mae danced at my feet on the floor, alternately barking and whining like Gus's little henchman. Once we get in the room, Gus pants like he's run a marathon and Mae is nosier than Gladys Kravitz. Did I mention it was raining and they tripped me with their leashes after I paid? Wild jackals, I tell you. They are a nightmare at the vet. So that was Tuesday. Wednesday my baby Geege got extensive dental work done. He had to be put under and I was a wreck all day. Wednesday night we tried to ease him back into home while he tripped his face off from pain medication. So two very expensive vet visits this week. I'll be happy not to visit the vet again for a while. Oh never mind, all three have to go back for the second part of a booster in the next two weeks. Shenanigans await.
4. Is she a hero in my life? No. Do I think she could be a hero to people struggling with a transgender identity issues? Absolutely. I wonder if the people who can't reconcile the idea of more than one type of hero in their minds are just intellectually incapable of doing so. Some people are heroes to many, and some people are heroes to specific groups of people, and more than one type of hero can co-exist in this universe. There are many ways to be heroic, courageous, and brave. One's life does not need to be in danger from outside forces or disease to be any of those things. I count suffragettes among my heroes and I'm pretty sure many people who were never denied the right to vote wouldn't. But if you told me they were not heroes I'd tell you to go fuck yourself because to me, they are. Just because someone is not a hero to you doesn't mean they can't be a hero to someone else. Heroes are personal. It is not for us to decide  who holds the title of hero for someone else. Live and let live.
5. Happy birthday to two lovely ladies today: my BFF Kim and Jana. Enjoy, friends!

I opened on a sour note and will end on an up: I read two books this week, finalized my bathing suit situation for the summer, and got my hair cut & colored by the fabulous Kristi at Sensational Scissors. I always love to spend time with her. And of course, vacation is three short weeks away from today. I'm hanging on for it.

Wishing you & yours a recharging weekend full of awesome shit.

  1. Oh man the good old Laguna Beach days. I need to check out Bosch, it's on my list but the Amazon part threw me. You have had your hands full with those pups, hopefully no more vet visits for months to come. The whole my hero is better than your hero that was happening on Facebook was disgusting, I stayed off Facebook for a few days. There are many reasons to look up to a person or group.

  2. Those pugs. They may look nonchalant, but they know what they are doing!! We had a dal like George. He would perch on my dad's lap and do the same. Crazy pup. Hope they are both up to their weekend selves. I suspect they will be. ;)

  3. Thank you with #4!!!!! I'm so sick and tired of people just bitching and complaining on FB about Caitlyn! You are dead on!!!!

  4. $4. YES. I had to exercise so much restraint not to get into a majorly unpleasant FB convo (because are they ever cordial on subjects like that?) when I saw people start posting that military hero photo.

  5. Don't you love nail places that'll get you in and out during lunch?! I'm going today at lunch, and I love the mid-day pamper and knocking it out on lunch instead of going after work or on the weekend. Win-win!

And Laguna Beach!! Ahhhh I may have to break out my dvd's and/or The Hills this weekend :)

    Happy Friday <3

  6. Love, love, love #4! Yes,live and let live. If we all thought alike we would be like Stepford people. I do not see the facebook stuff,so that is good. Twitter does not have as much of that, because of who I follow,I guess.
Our furry kids are the best, wish they could talk!!! LOL at the leash-tripping. At least you didn't step in dog dooty
like your brother!! Awesome the salon near work is so quick! Perfect use of a lunch hour.
Happy, safe and sound weekend to all!!!! Love,Your Momma

  8. BOSCH, yessssss! wasn't that a great show?!?
pets tripping on pain meds are hilarious. my friend's dog kept on moaning/howling while trying to walk and he was walking like he just downed a keg.

  9. I agree with you; why does there have to be a "right" type of hero? Different people value and respect different things.

  10. Aww poor pup! Hope he's feeling better. Love that toe nail polish color! Happy Friday

  11. OOH hope the pup feels better soon. I totally wish people would mind their own business and just let people live. It's so crazy. I so need to find a nail salon that works that fast. The place I go to takes 2 hours for a pedi and a gel manicure. I wish they moved a bit faster. Happy Friday.

  12. Poor pups!! I hate having to put them under :( I haven't had to with Hawkeye but they said maybe a teeth cleaning in a year or two. I don't wanna.
LOL at Kristin's necklace. Yup, had that. I have photos from college in it, for sure. I should post it...

  13. #4? I think I love you for that. A response so perfect I wish I had thought of it. And the pugs? I love them too. Thanks for the posts, I enjoy reading them!

  14. Was never into Laguna Beach - Not sure why - but just never got into it.

And puppies :( I hate when they have to put them under.

  15. I'm getting my nails done after work & I am so excited. I need to go through my polish too. I have so many.

  16. ugh sorry about the pups! hope they behave better at the vet next time.
this: Just because someone is not a hero to you doesn't mean they can't be a hero to someone else. - i legit do not understand people who don't understand this. it's the same with role models, idols, heck even crushes! we are all different and therefore we like / look up to different people. why is that so hard to understand?! i couldn't give 2 shits about bruce jenner or caitlyn (still jenner?) but if i was someone going through that i would be in love with her because that takes some serious guts.
i bought one of those laguna beach necklaces once and my mum threw it out. when i cried and asked why she said 'you'll thank me in a few years'. haha.

  17. Why is it always when you pay off a car, it starts to need work? Boo. I need to look into getting Oskar's teeth professionally cleaned but I know it's pricey and he'll wig out...hope your weekend is full of R&R!

  18. What a great a nail place, so speedy! Wish I could get my haircut during lunch hour that fast :). Have a great weekend!

  19. Your poor dog! That's scary that they have to go under for dental work. When we were younger and our dog had to go for stuff like that my dad would just do it without telling us because he knew we would freak out. It sucks when you have to be the one to take them! I totally remember the choker necklace fad...I may have had few. Hope you have a great weekend!

  20. I, too, loathe going to the vets; it always ends up being a super-expensive visit and thank Christ we aren't there too often!! Glad Geege is doing well and recovering from his surgery.
I go on Tuesday for an assessment for Charlie... trying to figure out if hydrotherapy will help his leg (luxating patella) or if he needs surgery first. Friggin 2 grand! *faints*. We'll see, lets not put the cart before the horse.

Have a FAB weekend with the Mr. and the kids. ;)
    xo

  21. Sorry to hear about the pups. Hope Geege is feeling better at this point. I feel your pain with the vet bills...I cringe every time. Hope you get to relax and recharge this weekend!

  22. Gracie and Mac are due for their shots and Gracie's ear problems is out of control again so I foresee vet bills in my future as well. They always must cause a scene at the vet as well, so fun times. Though, being Gus's little henchman might be a fun job! Clearly I need to get on the Bosch train. I freaking loved Laguna Beach. We used to have Laguna Beach watch parties in college. Those were the days man. I hope that you have a fabulous weekend and get some relaxing and fun in after this week!

  23. I've had a shit week too, I'm eagerly watching my clock tick it's way slowly to 5 PM.

I was never able to get my eye brows done during work when I worked in an office. My whole eye lid turns a bright angry red when the rip the little hairs out.

  24. what the heck is Bosch? i guess I need to look that up. #4. virtual high fives and clapping.

  25. I agree with the Caitlyn Jenner thing. Just let people do what they need to do to be happy for god's sake. Having been the maker of unpopular decisions like oh I don't know "destroying my children with divorce" "not honoring my marital vows for life" ... yes people threw that shit at me... I get it. #TeamCaitlyn

If you haven't read the backstory on the "hero" pic that went viral regarding this story please do... the universe intervened there.

Have a great weekend my friend and wish me luck on my tennis match tomorrow lol

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love your Caitlyn Jenner bit. Perfect. I don't understand why it's now Caitlyn vs. Soldiers. What the hell? Aren't they mutually effing exclusive?! I appreciate both. I don't get the insta war on who is a hero and who isn't. Insane.

And yeah, my dog is soo weird at the vet. It's the toughest place to calm them down! I can only imagine with two as I know they kinda feed off each other more. Sorry for that expensive bill, that's no fun! They better cuddle harder this weekend!

    Have a good one lady!

    ReplyDelete
  27. My dogs never fail to mortify me at the vet. Jett, like Gus, perched himself (all 40 pounds) on my lap to assert dominance over a cat and Scout. Because they were the only other animals in the waiting room on Monday.
Is Bosch on Netflix? I need a new show!
Wait, that was 2004? People dressed like that in 2004? I glanced at that picture and assumed 1997.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Never heard of Bosch, but the guy on the right in that picture is in the show Steve and I just started watching, The Wire. Will add Bosch to our never ending list. Sorry you had to shell out so much $$$ on he pups, but Im sure they are appreciative. Id love to be a fly on the wall and see them in action at the vet. Oh, KCav. I thought I just read somewhere that she is pregnant with her third child... someone needs to put her 2004 necklace on her and choke some sense into her, because she doesn't vaccinate her children. Asshole. Happy Birthday to your friends. Loooooooove you!!!!!!

  29. Word on the hero bit. Seriously. The suffragettes were amazing and endured so much to attain a right I hardly have to think about.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree that we are no one to dictate who the title of "heroes" applies to. It's a subjective word that is personal to each of us and defined differently because we're all different. I just find it amusing that Caitlyn is hotter than his ex-wife. just sayin'. Woop Woop for vacation time approaching! Have a great weekend Steph! -Iva

  31. Yes, yes, and more yes to number 4!!! I'm totally with you on that. Chokers... I may have worn those.

  32. There's nothing more annoying than a nail polish that's so sheer you can barely tell it's on. I once got a Sally Hansen "jelly" one that was purple... and when it was on it literally just looked like I was cold and had a purple tinge, lololol HORRIBLE
Love the way you worded the hero debate. It blows my mind how negatively some people are acting about this... and not even about Caitlyn herself, but her being seen as a "hero." Just because someone thinks she's a hero doesn't meant they don't think our troops are heroes - close minded bigots.

  33. #4 is EXACTLY what I've been needing to see. I've been so busy that I haven't been able to think straight, much less communicate my thoughts. My thoughts were pretty close to what you said.

  34. Can you please send extra info on where you found what I am sure are well-made swimsuits that aren't a small fortune that a respectable woman would wear? I realized that I have not bought a swimsuit since 2010 which isn't as weird as it sounds considering I only wear one about once a year, but I may need to restock the supplies this year because my "newlywed fifteen" seems to just be a part of life at this point.

  35. Do you bring your own polish to your nail place? I love and completely agree with what you said about Caityn. Great job!
