Life Lately...March

What I'm doing lately...

Drinking...one of these every once in a while. I drink water with lemon all day every day and coffee for a lot of the day. I like to sneak in an iced tea or one of these and shake shit up.

Keeping a list...of possible long weekend trip destinations. I always like to travel to new places, and I always like to have a list of possible destinations in my back pocket. Do you have any ideas, Philly area friends? Short/cheap flights or driving distances of under 5 hours?

Still on a high from...Dirty Dancing on stage Tuesday night. Carol and I went with Michelle's mom, two aunts, sisters, and cousins. Thanks to Aunt Cathy for securing the tickets! We had dinner at Bellini Grill before the show. I was super jazzed to see they sold merchandise, and I bought a zillion things because I'm insane. I've had the time of my life indeed. I really enjoyed the show because honestly? I love all things Dirty Dancing. However, I do think it was a hard translation for a much loved movie to go from screen to stage. I thought Baby was awesome and looked and sounded a lot like Jennifer Grey. Johnny was a little off, forced or overacted maybe? Then again, no one comes close to The Swayze. I really liked seeing how they worked around some of the limitations of the stage, and how they incorporated the music without relying solely on the soundtrack. The two main singing cast members were very good. I appreciated how they stuck with the main frame of the story and made sure to include well known dialogue but were a little more interpretive in some scenes. I went into it with no expectations - I knew it couldn't be a replica of the movie I love so much so I liked what they did well and wasn't bothered by what they didn't. Was it a technical masterpiece or an award winning show? Probably not. I think it's a show for true fans so in that regard, I loved it.
Looking forward to...seeing The Breakfast Club on the big screen tonight for the 30th anniversary re-release. Yes, I will be the dork in the John Bender tee-shirt. Look for that on Instagram, I'm sure it'll be up there. It's like a freaking 80s revival in my life this week.

Reading...The Bullet by Mary Louise Kelly. Mark your calendar for the next Show Us Your Books link up on April 7.

Finishing...My March Relationship Theme goals for Choose Your Own Adventure. The link up is a week from today on April 2.

Regretting...That not everyone knows this. It's important.

Playing...a lot of Amy Winehouse.

Watching...Very little TV. Phase 1 of Give Comcast Das Boot has commenced.

Loving...being back in touch with my old college friend Jana, who you likely know better as Jana from Jana Says and the lady with whom I peddle the aforementioned Show Us Your Books linkup. She trekked into Philly yesterday and we had lunch at Continental Midtown. We haven't seen each other in 15 years. Can you believe it? We're going to make it a monthly thing. I'm so pleased to have this relationship revived.
Needing...to get my shit in check. Birthday month eating has gone way off the rails as you see from the lunch time dessert above.

Appreciating...My parents.

Nodding at...

What's life like for you lately?

  1. Uhm...yea...I don't want to sound weird or anything, but I totally feel like if I was in college with Jana and you...we'd have been friends. Glad to see you reconnect in person. One of my constants in my life is a college roomie of mine. Now, when I fly from Sydney to Texas, I make a point to see her coming in or going out of DFW (she lives in Ft Worth). Those friendships are special ones.

    1. Yes. You need to do that. I think I can speak for Steph when I say that we'd have way more fun than 3 people should have. Even if we all need to be in bed by 9 because we're old ladies.

  6. That's so nice that you and Jana were able to get together! Have you guys been to Newport, RI yet? I also love Cape Cod. Years ago we went to Hilton Head, South Carolina...oh and Charleston! I would love to see Charleston. DC? My memory is horrible but we also did a trip to Maine...Kennebunkport...that was really nice. That was years ago too.

  10. Dirty dancing on stage? I just exploded! I watch that movie whenever it is on! Love that movie.

Aw reconnecting with old friends is awesome... especially when they are awesome people like Jana.

  11. Since I kind of suck at knowing PHL prices, I'll just give you some ideas. LOL... my family used to have a cabin on Lake George in upstate NY. Definitely one of those slow down destinations... orrrrr My sister lives in Rochester, and she and my mom did a lot of winery hopping in the area last year, if that's your jam. They found an amazing Italian restaurant that I still hear about a year later. I can get details.

  12. Have you been to Gettysburg? Beautiful in the fall.

I love that you and Jana had a chance to get together. Both of you have incredibly relevant blogs, so I can see why you're friends (you know some blogs are NOT relevant).

  13. The Breakfast Club is one of my favorite movies. So cool to get to go see it for the anniversary!

I'm just partial but I recommend either the White Mountains/North Conway, NH or Burlington VT as a weekend getaway.

And I will definitely be there for the book link up on 4/7 :)

  14. Dirty Dancing is coming to Dallas and I'm definitely going!! First, because I love supporting live theater and second because duh, dirty dancing!

  15. So remember how I was all excited about The Breakfast Club being in theaters and all that? Guess who can't see it? That's right. ME. Scott has to work both nights it's showing and it's not exactly 8 year old friendly. Me=ALL THE RAGE.

It was so good to see you and I can't believe it had been 15 years. You know you have a good friendship when you can go that long without seeing each other and start talking like no time had passed. Blogging might have helped a bit with that but still.

Virginia Beach and/or Colonial Williamsburg might be a good choice. Someone suggested Gettysburg. Scott and I did that last summer and it was so much fun. I recommend taking a ghost tour if you go. We're planning on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this summer but that might be outside your preferred driving time.

  16. omg, "The Breakfast Club" is playing on the big screen?!?!? What!!! That's so awesome. I would go see ANY John Hughes movie in the theater. So fun!

Yes to weekend trip destinations. Always the best way to spend your time.

And appreciating your parents is always a good thing, I hope they read your blog!

  17. Love that quote about people being clouds. It's amazing how much brighter a room *cough cough at work* can be when one person leaves it. And that Dirty Dancing show looked fabulous, jealous!!!

  19. Ahhh so awesome that you and Jana got together!!! How fun! And I loved your pun...."I've had the time of my life indeed" it totally made me smile. What a cool show to go see!! I thought about whipping out the breakfast club last weekend but it never happened.

  20. Cough cough Boston! I am so glad you got to see Dirty Dancing, it would be interesting to see the translation. I am sure some scenes are too hard to make on stage. So nice to connect with old friends and Jana is awesome.

  26. I'd so go see Dirty Dancing!

I've been watching so much TV.

  27. Have you seen the Dirty Dancing-themed commercial for some healthcare company? It is hilarious.

I think when we move cable is getting the boot; we used to have Comcast and now have DirecTV. They both suck. I may consider Verizon Fios, as I have heard good things, but it seems like you can get every channel you need for much cheaper using Apple TV, the new Amazon one, etc.

  28. Newport, RI is a great little town, and just about 5 hours from Philly. Also, Bethlehem, PA has a bunch of bands going through this summer, and that's just a short ride from you. Reconnecting with old friends is one of the best things in the world- so happy that you'll be making it a monthly thing too! Also, it's treat 'yo self month- you deserve alllll the desserts!

  29. Oh! Dirty Dancing is a classic!! It's one of my mom and I's favorite movies!

  30. YES to no more cable!!! Also, coming from the Midwest, you have no idea how spoiled you are on the places you can go for the weekend. 1. NYC, duh. 2. Hudson Valley, 3. Delaware. 4. Baltimore. 5. DC. Check Groupon and then get out there. Also, you have to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge so...

  31. Oh I'm so jealous; I would love to see the Breakfast Club on the bigscreen (not just TBS reruns lol). Did you see the interview with Molly on the Today show (I think it was last week?)? She has not changed one bit!
    Happy weekend Steph!
