My Movie Pals

Here are some of my favorite movie characters. Embrace them. Love them. Pet them. And tell me yours. Let's begin. Or, as number one would say, "No more yanky my wanky. The Donger need food."

Photo: imdb.com
  • Long Duck Dong, Sixteen Candles. What a laugh on this guy.
  • Jake Ryan, Sixteen Candles. Do I need to give reasons?
  • Keyster Soze, The Usual Suspects
  • Tommy Devito, Goodfellas. Funny how?
  • Johnny Castle, Dirty Dancing. You just put your pickle on everybody's plate, college boy, and leave the hard stuff to me.
  • Noah, The Notebook.
  • Rocky Balboa. So iconic an entire city considers him a real hometown guy.
  • Lester Burnham, American Beauty. I love when he embraces the fuck it attitude.
  • I'm not sure if I can pick just one favorite from Revenge of the Nerds...Lewis Skolnick, Booger Dawson, Takachi. How do I choose? I can't. Hair pie for all.
Excuse please, but why do they call you "Booger?"
"I don't know."

  • Dr. Peter Venkman,Ghostbusters. What a lovely singing voice you must have!
  • Veronica Sawyer, Heathers
  • Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins. Practically perfect in every way.
  • Jason Bourne, Bourne movies. He kicks total ass. All the time.
  • Paul Finch, American Pie. I love a good smart ass.
  • Will Hunting, Good Will Hunting. Brilliant. Rough around the edges. I love him.
  • Yoda, Star Wars. Awesome he is.
  • Elle Woods, Legally Blonde(s). She's a great person to have in your network.
  • John Bender, The Breakfast Club. Eat...my...shorts.
  • The Bride, Kill Bill. She kicks ass.
  • Clark Griswold, Vacation movies. I basically married him. His zest for life is lovable.
  • Styles, Teen Wolf. Douchey as a friend but amusing nonetheless.
  • Ouiser Boudreaux, Steel Magnolias
  • Jack Butler, Mr. Mom. 220, 221...whatever it takes.
  • Louden Swain, Vision Quest. When he climbs that pegboard, man. Nothing but heart.

Movie characters I don't like:

  • Luke Skywalker, Star Wars. Whiny baby! Whiniest whiner of all freaking whiners
  • George Bailey, It's a Wonderful Life
  • Harry and Sally, When Harry Met Sally. Am I the only person who hates this movie?
  • Dorothy and crew, The Wizard of Oz. More whiners.
  • Mike Damone, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Complete douche. Zero redeeming qualities.
  • Penny Lane, Almost Famous. I adore absolutely everything about this movie except for Kate Hudson.
  • The kid in The Princess Bride. He's a little butthole.
  • Grandpa Charlie, Willy Wonka. How dare he be the one to go with that fool Charlie, when he's bedridden? He can magically get up and go? Meanwhile Charlie's mom is killing herself picking up after all the bedridden people. Preposterous.
I could go on for an eternity, and I probably meant to...I think this post has been in draft for two years. As you might imagine with a title like this one, there might be some crossover between this list of my movie pals and this list of people I'd like to have as neighbors. I guess a TV character friend list will be forthcoming.

Tell me some of your movie favorites. And tomorrow, don't forget to link up for the Choose Your Own Adventure Challenge!

  1. This is such a good post. How does one choose. I haven't seen Vision Quest forever but yes to Louden. I got to say Steve Prefontaine, from Prefontaine. David from American Flyers, and Steve Tevere from American Anthem, no explanation needed. All oldie but goodies. Not sure why they are all athletic movies, but they always inspired me.

  2. This. Is. Awesome!!!!! I would totally be friends with Johnny from Dirty Dancing, or Elle Woods or Paul Finch!!! I am with you on the whole Grandpa Charlie thing. Like how in the actual fuck did he just get up and walk??? Such a faker! I bet those old folks are dancing around and getting nasty while the mom is at work. Just pisses me off! Way to ride the system!

I would like to be friends with the Genie in Aladdin. He has some sass and it wouldn't hurt to be friends with someone who could grant you wishes. I want to be friends with the entire cast of The Big Bang Theory. And How I Met Your Mother...but you didn't even dabble in to TV friends! Seriously a list that can go on and on!

  3. I've never liked Kate Hudson in anything ever. I've also never seen half these movies you speak of (a movie buff I am not), but I have a list of favorite t.v. characters a mile long.

  7. Carolyn: Whose car is that out front?

Who's car is that out front?!

It's mine. A 1970 Pontiac Firebird. The car I've always wanted and now I have it. I rule!

I didn't lose my job. It's not like "Whoops! Where did my job go?" I quit.

  8. Louden Swain... I played that movie and Lunatic Fringe hundreds of times in high school getting psyched up for all of my swim meets and tennis matches. And that thing he did with his hand in the car, my boyfriend did that endlessly and we would die laughing. John Bender would have been my best bad decision in high school. Had a few like that! Great list!

  12. I am so glad someone else doesn't like Dorothy and the crew! I CANNOT STAND THEM. I actually can't stand the whole movie....crazy I know. Now I have to think about my favorites....I am drawing a blank! What movies do I like? Do I like movies? O.o Panic attack. I have issues....

  13. Yes to Veronica Sawyer and Ouiser! Some of my favorites are Lucas in Empire Records, Tai in Clueless, Lars in Lars and the Real Girl, Sandy in Grease, Kevin in Home Alone, Ren and Ariel in Footloose, Uncle Buck... I'm sure there are a million more. I love this post! I may have to copy you.

I thought I was the only one who doesn't like The Wizard of Oz. I feel like it's un-American, but I just don't like it. I also don't like A Christmas Story. Sue me! Haha! I also don't care for Harry. And I'd throw in Lloyd Dobler while I'm at it.

  14. I refuse to watch Harry Met Sally and also Sleepless in Seattle! I totally want/need to be friends with geniuses like Jason Bourne. I'd also like Liam Neeson (as the dad in "Taken") because you never know when you need the special set of skills he has. Oh, and the entire cast of Pitch Perfect. I just wanna say "Aca-cuse me" all the time.

  15. Love Johnny Castle and any character Kevin Spacey plays.

  16. Luke Skywalker is a huge whiny baby but I hate Anakin more...

  17. Louis in Lady Sings the blues. I LOVE him!
Randall Patrick McMurphy in One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
King Arthur (the Richard Harris one) in Camelot
I would marry any one of these men.
    (And of course, Clark.)

  19. haha i love this. i have never seen harry met sally, so i wouldn't know.. but i think i used a gif in my post today lol. it is apparently a pride and prejudice adaptation though, so its crazy that i havent. the kid in the princess bride is definitely the worst part of that movie!

  21. Great lists. The dislike of Harry AND Sally as well as the grandpa from Willy Wonka made me laugh.

  22. Not just saying this because they are the first listed but as a huge John Hughes fan, I love the 16 Candles ones! lol so good. I'd love to have LDD as my bff and be married to JR.

I love the grandson in The Princess Bride! He's a little bratty at first but he gets it by the end :)

    1. Jake Ryan is a dream, that's for sure. I often wonder how he fared after high school.

    2. If movie cliches teach us anything, I'm sure he works at a gas station and LDD is a billionaire.

  23. 25 years after seeing The Breakfast Club for the first time, I'm still madly in love with John Bender.

I remember us quoting Long Duck Dong ALL THE TIME in college. And, true story, when Harry Met Sally is how Jody and I became friends.

  24. LOL at the grandfather in Willy Wonka.. I always found that odd too. Nevermind sharing a bed with 3 other people where none of you get up EVER.. yuck.

And YES to Paul Finch, and best supporting actress for that would have to be Stifler's mom ;-)

  25. All this has taught me is that I definitely need to watch more movies- I hardly know any of these! But loving the Yoda addition I do.

  26. Grandpa Charlie pissed me off too...glad to know it wasn't just me =P

  27. Love Johnny Castle!! And let me tell you Keyser Soze might be one of the best characters EVER written. Literally till the end I was duped and I am never duped!!!

  28. I think Luke Skywalker is a little bitch. Ha. But I love Yoda. I would love to hang out with Pauly Shore in any of his movies, but only for one night because he would then get SUPER annoying. Also, I wanted to be on the vacation with all of the people in Couple's Retreat.

  29. we were totally buffs until you said you didn't love when harry met sally! when i was little it made me wanna move to NYC! i can't stand penny lane either but i love the movie. i have the script signed to me from cameron crowe!

  30. I want to be friends with Ouiser & Clairee from Steel Magnolias.

I totally agree with When Harry Met Sally. I saw it once. I don't ever need to see it again.

It kinda hurt a little to read your remark about Kate Hudson in Almost Famous. I adore her as that character.

I'd want to save Julian (RDJ's character) in Less Than Zero.

I'd want to help Rayon in Dallas Buyer's Club (Jared's Leto's character) feel loved.

I'd want to be an extra bridesmaid in Bridesmaids. (I've been a bridesmaid 13 times. I'm prepared for it.)

  31. You don't like When Harry Met Sally? We can no longer be fake friends. It's one of my favorites. Maybe that's because my husband is my real-life Harry - dated over 20 years ago - and were in and out of each other's lives - got back together for good 7 years ago and been married for almost 5.

I do LOVE me some Johnny Castle though!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ugh Mike Damone, he is the worst. I agree on Will Hunting and John Bender, love. Buuuut I hate Noah and absolutely everything about the Notebook.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hahaha! I love this, especially the part about Grandpa Charlie. I remember even as a kid wondering how that was fair that he got to go into the chocolate factory. Manipulation if you ask me.
