Hungry Eyes: Ga-gung Ga-gung Chili

You know when Baby is learning to dance and she's not getting it? Johnny says, "It's not on the one, it's not the mambo. It's a feeling...a heartbeat. Ga-gung. Ga-gung. Don't try so hard. Ga-gung. Ga-gung. Close your eyes." Cue Hungry Eyes.
Chili is the same thing. You have to taste your way through making it. It's a feeling...a heart beat. Ga-gung. Ga-gung. Chili.
Ingredients
1.25 lb ground beef
1 lb beef for stew
1/2 red onion, chopped
1/2 tsp garlic, minced
1 cup bell peppers, chopped
15 oz tomato sauce
3 tbs tomato paste
28 oz crushed tomatoes
15 oz pinto beans, rinsed
15 oz kidney beans, rinsed
diced green chiles
Chili powder - start with two tablespoons and add as needed
Cumin - start with two tablespoons and add as needed
Paprika - start with one tablespoon and add as needed
Garlic powder - start with one tablespoon and add as needed
Ground mustard - start with one teaspoon and add as needed
Salt & pepper to taste (last)
Hot sauce if you choose, to taste.
Directions
Drain and rinse beans in colander.

Brown ground beef and half of the onion. Drain and set aside. Cook stew meat in same pot without washing it out. After the outside is all browned, add the other half of the onion and peppers and cook until veggies start to get soft, about four minutes.

Add tomato sauce, green chiles, crushed tomatoes in juice, and beans. Stir well. Add your seasonings and stir. Cook over medium for five minutes, taste, add additional seasonings if desired. Cover and simmer on low for 20 minutes.
If you want to be a fancy dancer, you can make homemade cornbread in a cast iron skillet using this recipe. To make it in a cast iron skillet, put two tablespoons of butter in the skillet in the oven and let melt, then pour the cornbread in and stir a bit. Bake as instructed - mine took a bit longer but I didn't time it so keep an eye on it.

  2. bahahaahah! i love how you love dirty dancing. THIS IS MY DANCE SPACE, THAT IS YOUR DANCE SPACE. YOU DON'T COME INTO MINE, I DON'T GO INTO YOURS.

i honestly think that dirty dancing is our version of mean girls (omg, blog post idea just popped into my head) -- we could quote that shit all day!

that chili looks so awesome! we got a shit load of snow and hot chili with major carbs sounds good right about now.

  5. Come on ladies! God wouldn't have given you maracas if he didn't want you to shake them!

  6. The cornbread OMG! I am totally screwed if I make that. Tons of butter and cinnamon sugar. I was already in a sugar coma from eating the cheerios chewies I made yesterday, that I totally knew would be lethal to me. I propose protein change places with carbs for eternity and fat have the same calories/nutrition as green vegetables. #rightnow

    Love your MOMMA

  8. Okay, this might be the cutest (and most accurate) description of how to make chili I've ever seen. I completely agree that it's a food you just have to taste your way through eating! When I was moving out of the house-I asked my mom and aunt and everyone I knew for the chili recipe that I ate growing up--and they all looked at me with stone cold eyes and said "there is no recipe." Oh, the horror! Haha! I'll definitely taste my way through your recipe though! Sounds delicious!

  11. Connecting cooking chili to Dirty Dancing - GENIUS! And I've never tried the cornbread in a cast iron skillet, but I'm adding it to my list of things to do!

  12. Chili always hits the spot! And I might have to try your cornbread recipe instead of my usual plan of buying the mix in the small blue box.

  13. This comparison...freaking beautiful.

I just made chili this week too! Perfect, since apparently winter is never going to end.

  14. I feel that most of my cooking is this way. Recipes are guidelines only; its all about taste.

All of your DD references make me feel that I really need to watch the movie one of these days.

  15. I really appreciated that link.....and now I want to go watch dirty dancing....or try to make Mark catch me and launch me over his head in a lift....which would never happen....now I'm depressed....let's eat some chili

  18. Angel likes to tease me because my chili never tastes exactly the same because I "reinvent" it every time. Now I'll just say that I'm making it the way my heart feels!

  19. Hahaha! I love the connection! I'm totally pinning this recipe. Can you believe I've never made chili before?

  20. Ha! My daughter asked if we could have chili for dinner tonight. What interesting timing.

I also make it however I feel like it that day. Like me, my chili is moody.
