The Streets of Philadelphia - New Year's Day Version

What the hell is happening, friends? I'm back to work after nine days off in a row. I feel sort of like I'm in the Twilight Zone. I'm zonked. You know that song The Streets of Philadelphia?

This is what the streets of Philadelphia look like on New Year's Day:
Bat cars. Golden slippers. Costumes. Merry mayhem. Bands in formation, poised to take their place on the street in front of the judges (Joseph A. Ferko String Band pictured above). Mummers work hard all year for this one day. It's like their Super Bowl.

This is what the skies in Philadelphia look like on New Year's Day
Mumfetti in the air near City Hall. A captain looks out on his band. Teddy bears are shot into the air and parachute down from the the sky.

More glimpses of my day and my people...disregard my fat guy in a little coat appearance - I'm wearing three layers, mofos:
Scenes from Ferko String Band (and one of our BFF Frank looking fierce with Uptown String Band in the lower right corner):

I hope you were able to watch the parade live, on TV, or via live stream yesterday. It's many things, this mummer business, and maybe you have to grow up in Philadelphia to truly understand it and appreciate it; but when it comes down to it it's a great, storied, long-standing tradition that's only held up on the backs of its members and their families. Mummery takes up a lot of time.

Thanks to all you mummers out there - from first prize to last, you certainly entertained. It was my first time back on the street in years. I only saw some wench brigades, the fancies, and the first six bands in person, but whether I saw it live or on TV, I really enjoyed the parade this year. A little slow (and can the fancies be first?) but not too many sucks in it.

Where are my January Spending Freeze people? On day two I want to buy all the things BUT I WILL NOT. However, I do suggest you satisfy yourself by entering some giveaways, like this one for a $75 Target Gift Card that I'm taking part in on Till Then, Smile Often; or this one pinned to the top of the Lower Bucks County Moms Facebook Page that has a huge list of prizes.

Now, excuse me while I roundhouse kick 849 cups of coffee in the face and make them my bitch.

  1. I have to say that was my first time watching and I haven't never seen one like it here but I don't go to many parades though. I thought MFD's group was amazing. I loved the theme and how they incorporated so many toys. The tinker toys and the army men! So good!

  4. First time watching the Mummers in years. Far different than I remember from my childhood. Especially the Fancies. The little green army men were my favorite.

  5. What a colorful and amusing coustume. Love it! On board with the spending freeze! Day 1 and I almost stopped for my morning coffee but needed to remind myself that it was THE DAY. :)

  6. I think MFD's costume looks as if it is a cross between an astronaut/firefighter/Elton John. Who makes all of the costumes? And do they wear them more than once? That must be a shit ton of work!

  10. Thanks for the link! They did a great job and the costumes were spectacular! I'm glad you made it to the parade even if you couldn't put your arms down.

  11. Mike Doyle was Buzz Lightyear! To infinity and Beyond. The toy soldiers and the accordions that came out of the jack in the box. Wind-up toy soldiers. Wonderful. I purchased a white long-sleeved v-neck INC tee at the Macy's for $4.42 during my mall walking yesterday. Resisted buying 75% off Xmas stuff.
Hoping for minimal snow and this frozen tundra weather to not last more than 12 hrs.
    Carpe diem.
    Love your MOMMA

  12. You know you're from Philly if you know what a Mummer is. I love meeting people from other areas and trying to explain... They just don't get it. By far, my favorite day of the year to be in Philly (even though I haven't been a part of it for quite some time) and I'm glad you got to be there live for the action. The pictures are great, and MFD... amaze balls!!! <3

  20. The Mummer experience to me prior to MFD was a New Year Day tradition on t.v. all day period. I did not watch or realize just the extent of this tradition. The costumes, music, dancing THE PROPS!!! It is truly an amazing feat not only these Mummers getting it done but getting it done so fabulously. I am blown away at the costumes, music, dancing THE PROPS!! Excellent Ferko just excellent and congratulations to MFD for his performance and so much more.

  22. This looks like SO much fun. I've never even heard of it.

I'm trying to do spending freeze for Jan but it is so hard. I went to buy a shovel tonight (which was allowed) and then by accident bought 2 other little things (as Christmas Tree Shop). I'm going to return them tomorrow. I'm compulsive. I can't go into stores. Too dangerous!

  23. So Philly is kind of awesome on New Years. I had no idea. I love it!
