36 Life Realizations from my 36 Years - Part I

Realizations I've come to along the way, part 1.

1. The definition of success is not the same for everyone. Be proud of your accomplishments, no matter how big or small.

2. If a relationship has to be a secret, that relationship is fucked up in some way.

3. You are responsible for your own happiness. No one else.

4.  Just because you can talk on the phone everywhere doesn't mean you should. People do not want to hear your one sided cell phone conversations on public transportation or in a restaurant or anywhere else, no matter how hilarious you believe you and your friend to be.

5. Clowns are bad fucking news. Avoid them. No good ever came from a clown.

6. The things you spend 99% of your time worrying about will never happen. When something bad does happen, it's usually something it never occurred to you to worry about.

7. You see what people let you see - just because someone's life looks perfect doesn't mean it is. We all have our struggles - we're not required to put them on display, and we shouldn't if we can help it. Deal with your shit in private and be cognizant that others may appear fine but are doing the same.

8. It's infinitely more fun to be yourself than to conform to be cool.

9. You are not winning powerball. Get to work.

10. Someone will always be better than you at something, someone will always be worse than you at something. Someone will always have more than you and someone will always have less. Comparison is the thief of joy. Stop doing it.

11. There is no trick to diet and exercise: eat real food 97% of the time, everything in moderation, and move your ass.

12. All dating rules, advice, and games suck. Don't play them and always go with your gut.

13. You are your own best encouragement, your own competition and your own worst nightmare: your choice.

14. Ladies, you will get your period the one time you don't have a tampon. You will find yourself immediately saying to a friend/coworker/stranger I can't believe this, I always have a tampon.

15. Every problem you have is your responsibility to solve regardless of who caused it. Blame doesn't solve a fucking thing, it just wastes time.

16. You are your most important relationship. If you don't take care of yourself, you aren't any good to anyone else.

17. Miracles happen. You have to be open to them.

18. If you drop your expectations of other people and situations, you will have much less disappointment and much more joy.

Next Wednesday: part II. You're on the edge of your seat, aren't you pal?

  1. Amen, sistah. Especially "go with your gut". That's my motto.

  2. Scott has a friend who really thinks he'll win the lottery. He's the type who would win and immediately cut off contact with everyone because he "doesn't need anyone anymore". (I don't like him.)

    I agree about the clowns.

  3. Love them all especially 1, 2, 3, 7.

  4. The power ball one made me laugh my ass off. As did the tampon one, and the clown one. Clowns are so creepy.

#13 made me think of that song by Lit, "it's no surprise to me I am my own worst enemy..." I had a song for everything.

Love this post, can't wait for next week! <3

  6. Don't mind if I just send this to a few people. Also, I just glared at a lady yesterday that was talking on the phone while ordering coffee and ignoring the people trying to ask her questions. RUDE.

  8. #10 Comparison- it's human nature, for the most part, and once we learn that it is not a good thing, hooray!
Live and learn. When you live and do not learn, you are coming back here for another life.
    Carpe diem!

    love, your MOMMA

  15. Love every single one of these... very insightful and should be on the list of must read material for teens! It took me getting cancer to realize #16. So so true! Also, I adopted a life motto of Illegitimus non carborundum (Don't let the bastards grind you down!) when I turned 25.

It's safe to say that the Doyle's will not be clowns this Halloween or anytime in the future. ;-)

Looking forward to part II of this list!

  17. I love this post. The tampon one made me laugh. I love 15, I have an issue I didn't start and let go for some time, I am tired of the hate to I am laying it on the table... soon. #18 is so true and I worked on that in the last year and I have been happier. I can't wait until next weeks posts.

  18. clowns are the worst. it's really hard for me to drop expectations. #7 amen. actually amen to like all of these.

  19. So true!!! You're a genius. #4 is my favorite. I still might win the powerball though... you can win if you never buy a ticket, right? That totally happens...

  20. I want to write #2 down on a post it and stick it on the forehead of all my friends who are having secret relationships. And you are totally right about the tampon/period thing. EVERY TIME.

  21. I really AM on the edge of my seat, damnit! I want part two. All good advice!

  22. Dawn - I love your life motto!

So glad you realized #16 even if it took a hellish nightmare to get you to it.

Why won't mummers retire the clown theme?

    1. You got that right, Steph, but I'm blessed to have gone through the hellish nightmare, as it opened my eyes to so many new things in this short life.

Clown themes.... add pirates, cowboys, hobos, indians... long lost are the days of being truly creative.

  23. I have approximately 24334 tampons in my purse and work bag for this reason alone.

Clowns are creepy as shit. My great aunt collected them and had shelves and shelves full of ceramic clowns AND velvet "paintings" of clowns hanging on the walls. Why?!?!

I've learned that you are never too old for pimples. 31 and my face still breaks out like a teenager. Fuck my life.

  24. You are like my Oprah. SO WISE. I'm very much so looking forward to part 2!

  25. Also on the phone thing, just because you have a phone with you at all times doesn't mean you have to be available at all times.

    I love these, especially #3, #16 and definitely #15!

  26. Dawn - I keep suggesting a theme I think would be hilarious and awesome and MFD never listens!

I'm glad you have that takeaway from a bad experience - many people don't. Attitude is everything and life is short.

  27. Hi there! I like this post. Great advice. Although I have to say that I love clowns! I collect them, and my daughter is going to be a clown for Halloween this year :)

  28. Agree with all of it. Love the one about Powerball. Also clowns. Clowns are the worst.

Oddly, I have a post like this outlined for next month.
