I know this much is true

Some things are scientific facts that can be looked up. Some things can't be proven, but we consider them facts nonetheless because they hold such truth in our lives. Of course, they're usually in opposition to someone else's truth. My truth is not necessarily your truth which is okay, because if we were all the same life would be extremely boring. If you need your friends to be carbon copies of you, you should rethink your life. Mean Girls is a movie, not a think tank.

Some things I know to be true...

-The beach is a good place to come to terms with life.

-No one can love you unless you love yourself.

-Using a base coat and a top coat on your nails is crucial to a good manicure.

-It is possible to have a casual, surface relationship with someone you don't like. It's called being a grown up and is required in certain situations.

-A good laugh, a long sleep, a cup of coffee, and salt water can cure most things.

-Excuses make the most stand-up people sound like assholes.

-Dogs throw up, pee, and poop on fabric surfaces over hard, easy to clean surfaces 97% of the time.

-Books will take you places you'll never go in person.

-Saying, "I'm so busy" doesn't make you cool or enviable. It means you've over-scheduled yourself.

-A person's skin color, genitals, age, political leanings, or god don't make them a good or bad person. It's what's in their heart, soul, and mind, and how they act.

-Constant cynicism is tiring. We get it, you're an enlightened skeptic. You're also draining as fuck.

-There are worse things in life than being wrong.

-Not making time for and practicing self care is not selfless, it's foolish.

-Life is not fair and the world owes us nothing except for what we earn.

-There's three sides to every story: yours, mine, and the truth.

-Wrong is wrong, even if everyone is doing it. Right is right, even if no one is.

-Feminism is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. If you believe that, you're a feminist.

-When the snorer falls asleep first, the other person gets no sleep.

-Comparison is the thief of joy.

-Acting from a place of fear will never bring about the result I'm looking for, in any situation.

-There's bad everywhere, but there's also good. It's that way for a reason. We need the yin and the yang.

Thanks to The Girl Who Loved to Write for this post idea.

What are some of your truths?

  1. I don't think there is any of those that I do not agree with -- I love them all! Dogs never throw up, poop, or pee in an ideal spot. A lot of times their will be mere inches from the hardwood or tile, but nope... the carpet it is! Ugh. Also, huge yes to books. They offer such a wonderful escape :)

  2. I agree so much with the majority of this post. Love it. The books and the beach, so true. Constant cynicism is draining as all hell; I don't constantly want to be your sunshine, cheer the hell up.

  3. "As soon as your husband leaves to go anywhere, something will go wrong with a vehicle".
"The best laid plans of mice and men usually go awry." (which was the basis for my blog, originally)
"You can tell how a person really is by looking at how they treat the waitress."

I think a lot of this can be boiled down to people forgetting to be basic, kind human beings.

  4. Agree.Amen.Take me to church. Practicing gratitude all the time made me excel at living on this side. Counteracting my negative thoughts ASAP, too! My Yogi Bear will try and get sick at the door, so he is trying! My truth- we are all on our own journey to be good people and do good stuff and go back to the other side- maybe come back if we don't get it right. We are spirits in a material world.
Fear knocked on the door- FAITH opened- No one was there! (fortune cookie fortune)

  5. Yes, yes, yes ... oh man. That's all I could say to myself as I was reading your list.

  6. I absolutely love this post so much I want to hug it. And also? So true. If the snorer falls asleep first.... (which is pretty much my life, ha). Thank you for this <3

  7. I love this post. It's all so true. Thank you for posting this. I needed to hear this today.

  8. Awesome. Was just thinking about that dog/poop/pee/rug thing a little while ago.
One of my truths: Dogs are required for a full life!

  9. Damn dogs. Too true.
I haven't mastered the surface relationships with people I don't like thing. I don't think I ever will. I'm a scorpio, it's just not my nature. I either love you or I completely forget you exist.

  10. You are a wise, wise women. The one about having a casual, surface relationship with someone you don't like hit the nail on the head for me...I have about 20 of those thanks to several moms at school! Ha!! My truth??? Those who gossip with you will gossip about you! :)

  11. Ooohhhh...practicing self care. I fall down hard on that one. The rest of it? I merely stumble. I feel like it's the next list I should tackle with my therapist- I'll just print out your post, LOL!!! This was a great, concise, lovely bit of writing.

  12. That line makes me think of the song True by Spandau Ballet. "I knooow this... muuuch is... truuuue!"

Your point about there being 3 sides to a story is an interesting one, because basically every observer of an incident is going to have a slightly different take on it. But a hard and fast "truth" that exists independently of everyone's perception would require an outside force or observer to be the judgement dealer (which isn't much of a jump if you believe in God or a higher power, but if you don't then it's kind of like the tree in the woods question! A noise should be a noise regardless of whether someone hears it, but is it really?). Anyway, I've had this mental debate before and, after a couple headaches, I'm not sure I believe there is just one truth.

Oh, and dogs absolutely choose the worst surfaces! Kitchen tiles? No thanks - I'll have my accident on the shag carpet.

  13. I love the books one - so true as is the manicure tip! xo, Biana - BlovedBoston

  14. The best place for a good long cry is in a super hot shower
If you have any grievances with your parents/grandparents/older relatives - make peace with them - nothing worse than having a regret you can't right
and finally - bad choices are a part of who we are - good choices get us safe home at night

  15. I love all of these so much - especially the snoring one. bye bye sleep if KC goes to sleep before me.
and yes to the good and the bad.. and right and wrong... and draining cynics, so tiresome!
so i agree with the pets and always vomiting on the carpet and whatnot - but the other day my cat finally threw up on a hard surface and it was while we were at work, so it had dried and was so effing hard to get off the floor i was like 'oh my god why couldn't you throw up on the carpet?' lol.
comparison is the thief of joy. i try and remind myself that every single day, because almost every day i compare something!

  16. ps I love it when your pictures up the top change.

  17. amen to all of these, especially the excuses one. Dave constantly tries to excuse away certain things and I call him out on it all the time HUGE pet peeve of mine.

  18. I love the one about books, and comparison! My biggest truths are no matter how bad things are for you, someone else has it worse, and there is good in everything if you look for it.

    1. Yes Theresa! There is absolutely good in everything, you just need to look...very hard sometimes.

  19. Love these! The "I'm so busy" people kill me...I feel like they're just poor time managers.

    ReplyDelete
  20. i love this so much because ALL OF IT IS TRUE. whenever someone declines something (repeatedly) with an "im too busy", i usually say: then you have poor time management skills. this one person who kept on complaining about wanting to lose weight always used that excuse whenever i tried to get her to come workout or run trails etc...shit that didn't even cost money but the "i can't; i'm busy" excuse got old fast so i simply said: you're not too busy because i see you on social media all the time and if you are "too busy", then you have poor time management skills and need to fix that shit pronto or you're never going to get anything done in life.

she stopped talking to me .... i guess she didn't want to hear the truth! LOL.

  21. And THIS is why I like you. So true. and now i think I need to buy a base coat.

    ReplyDelete
  22. HAHA! YES! About the dogs and the snoring and the "I'm SO busy" (these people drive me insane and I could rant about it for hours). And all the rest, too.

I've never really spent much time thinking about my truths. I should probably do that. I guess one for me is that people will disappoint you but that doesn't mean you should give up on everyone. That, and kids will wake up early whenever there's no need to and be impossible to get up when it's important.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes!! I agree with every single one of these! If everyone believe that "A person's skin color, genitals, age, political leanings, or god don't make them a good or bad person. It's what's in their heart, soul, and mind, and how they act." could you imagine how much better the world would be?!?! And cynicism is draining as fuck! Nailed it!

    ReplyDelete
  24. These are absolutely all truths. Definitely about being busy. I used to think I needed to be busy all the time but more and more I find myself not wanting to schedule every little thing. Sometimes I need to just...be.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I wish needing to come to terms with myself justified a trip to the beach. these are all so very true. I wonder what is it about carpet that seems so much more enticing than tile for dogs?

  26. -When the snorer falls asleep first, the other person gets no sleep. (this is the truest thing I have ever read. My husband snores like the dickens!!!)

Your comment on feminism is dead-on. Sooooooooooo many women claim that they 'aren't feminist', I just can't even discuss that. So ... you don't think you have an equal say in how your life goes and the decisions you make? Nice one. Grr, drives me nuts!

Great read, I liked all your points. And yes, our entire house is hardwood yet when our dog is sick, he would much rather puke on the few rugs we have.

  27. I love this post... I hear the I'm so busy from so many of my Mom friends who have their kids in nineteen different activities. They are constantly going and doing. I feel no sympathy, I think it's so dumb. Go for a walk with your kid or curl up on the couch with them once in awhile! And dogs and kids never have accidents where they are easy to clean. I need the beach. Why is it such a good thinking place?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm learning the hard way about the dog pee and poop...so many other good points your brought up and to comment on...Ugh about the snoring!

  29. "It is possible to have a casual, surface relationship with someone you don't like. It's called being a grown up and is required in certain situations."

I feel like I am CONSTANTLY thinking this regarding my job/coworkers and my husband's job/coworkers (more at his previous job than the one he has now). I don't understand why people can't get along for the sake of being professional. No law says you have to be BFFs outside of work.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yes to so, so many of these! The dog one is a given - ugh. I really agree that excuses make you sound like an asshole and I have a particularly asshole-ish friend. I also agree life isn't fair and we should just deal with it, learning to see the flowers among the weeds, and the good along with the bad.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I was so upset when I found out it wasn't Ying & Yang but Yin & Yang...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh yes, I agree with a bunch of these. Comparison IS the thief of joy- it gets us nowhere! I think practicing gratitude for what we have goes hand in hand with trying not to compare ourselves to others. And three cheers for self care! It has to come first, no matter how much we'd rather take care of other people.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hahaha about the snorer one. It is seriously so true, as is the one about not using a topcoat. Actually, I agree with most of these!

    ReplyDelete
  34. LOL... it's called being a grown up. SO TRUE.

And the snorer one? Pretty sure it's why I'm a bloody terror these days.

The beach thing is so true. So. Very. True. It always makes me realize that me, my problems, and my life are VERY VERY small.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with all of those. Well, I'll just have to take your word on the dog one because I've only ever had outside pets, but the rest, the rest are dead on!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh man I agree with so much of this. The beach, the constant criticism (yes annoying as fuck) and totally agree that its whats inside that counts! Also base coat and top coat - essential!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Awesome post and totally true! I agree with you on all points!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think that most of these are truths for me, too! What a great post idea!!

  39. AMEN to excuses! My girlfriends and I were just talking about this the other night in terms of people who say they'll make plans then back out at the last minute. Just say you don't want to. Don't make up some long as mega excuse. No one respects that.
Also: amen to the snoring thing. Pete ALWAYS falls asleep first. -_-
